-srT waa early June. The maples
1- were unfurling their banners
kill ramainorl rlirled UD
tightly on the ends of twigs and
branches so very late this spring.
The half-grown leaves looked like
great blobs of green paint hang
ing In mid-air.
Byrd loved the morning hours
better than any part ot the day.
She awoke each morning with
zest for life pouring through her
veins, as If each day would pre
sent an entirely new world to be
lived and enjoyed. Sh radiated
young health and energy. She
slipped a rubber cap over her
golden coronet of hair and took
her cold shower.
"That's the penalty for being
Taised in the country," said Lar
ry, watching Byrd pirouetting
about the kitchen beating a
tattoo on the bottom of the dish
pan. He was just leavrag for the
office. He was still stretching and
yawning. "If you put half as
much pep into a party as you do
into this old apartment, you'd be
a screaming success."
Larry kissed her lightly" on her
cherry like lips and left.
But the- thoughts of their
nights immediately shadowed the
runshlne of the spring morning.
They, hadn't Jtad a single, eve
ning alone sln-ce they'd "moved
into the Coronado. .
They had gone somewhere to
dance, to dine, to the theatre, to
a movie, bringing up the rear of
the evening at somebody's house
- for a game ot bridge or a late
cession at poker.
- They progressed from Tiny's
' house, to Margy's, to India's to
their own.
- Nights of frolic! Nights of jazz!
And the only concession that
Larry made to the worry and
pressur. of business was his re
fusal to make a night of it. When
Larry went home at twelve
o'clock, everybody said Larry had
. had something on his mind.
But late hours didn't affect
- Byrd's freshness. Each morning j
she arose at the same hour as
- regularly as if an alarm clock had
, yanked her out of bed.
' . Seven-thirty! For it was the
one responsibility she had . had,
and Byrd fought for it, as if. she
might lose the privilege of get
ting Larry's breakfast if she once
over-slept. It was the one meal
she could depend upon.
For lately Larry had telephon

Larry had bought a new car. He

and clean, a,l ready for use.
Byrd went from stall to stall,
pricing each article and carefully
comparing quality with that al
ready quoted.
That was the way her mother
shopped. And Mrs. Hamilton
was considered one of the best
housekeepers in Jacksonville.
With a fancy market basket on
her arm. Byrd looked like a
school girl playing at hoosekeep.
Ing. Then she bumped smack into
Tiny. Tiny shopped daily at the
Euclid, for she and Fred were
very fond of good food and set
an elaborate table.
"Well, if it isn't the 'Early
Bird,' acting just like a grown-up
housekeeper." said Tiny, sur
prised to see Byrd. Byrd laughed.
Fred's former nickname still
clung to her.
"Larry's letting me cook our
dinners until he's made another
month's salary," remarked Byrd,
gleefully. "I Just love to cook.
you know."
"Well, for the love of hard
work," said Tiny, her pale, blue
eyes wide with amazement. "Catch
me cooking if my husband didn't
want me to. Fred Insists we keep
a cook or we'd eat every meal
out."
"I guess it's the way I've been
brought up," said Byrd, apolo
getically. "Dearie." said Tiny, confiden
tially, "forget those unfortunate
influences in your young life
Take a tip from me, darling "
"Oh, Tiny." interrupted Byrd,
"how is Margy's baby. Have you
heard lately?"
"Yes," saitT Tiny, her voice
lower now-. The mention of a
baby always brought that far
away look In her eyes. "He's
nor any better. Margy said last
night that they were going to
change doctors."
Byrd decided instantly to run
out and see Margy and Peter.
"We missed you last night,"
said Tiny. "Well, honestly, we
had more fun a regular circus."
This was Tiny's stock descrip
tion of every evening when they
went out or had a crowd In.
"Larry had to stay down and
work," said Byrd.
"Why. he told Fred he had an
other " but Tiny checked her
self In time.
"Another what?" asked Byrd,
curiously.
"Anotfier matter on hand."
Tiny lied glibly. "Oh, I suppose
he meant some business or other."
Byrd left her basket and asked
to have it delivered.
She was depressed over the
news of Margy's baby and that
was why she supposed she hadn't
seen thai post right behind her.
She backed right Into it and
crused a fender.
Byrd found Margy working un
der a nervous strain. She had
succeeded, however, in getting a
young, inexperienced girl to help
her.
"She can at least wash the
dishes and make the beds," said
Margy, In a tired voice.
Margy was holding peter in her
arms. They looked almost numb,
thought Byrd. as If peter might
roll out of them any minute.
"He cries whenever I put him
down," said Margy.
Byrd had her hat off In an In
stant. "I'm going to stay and help
you." she said In a matter-of-fact
voice. "And I know all about
babies. I used to take care of the
twins when they were small."
Byrd thrilled to the indescrib
ably delicious feeling of holding
tnat sort, sweet lump of Infinites
imal humanity In her arms.
'I've got some teleDhoninr in
do." said Margy. and hurried off.
uyra examined Peter carefully.
He didn't resemble that rose-leaf
of a baby she had rpd at tha
other day. His button of a nose
was still upholstering his little
pillow face, but the face was
drawn up as If in pain. And the
little cries that escaned everv lit
tle while were like the blea tings
or a lost lamb.
Byrd's eyes suddenly filled
with tears. She realized that
Peter was a very sick baby, In
deed. - The doctor came a little later
and Byrd stayed In the room dur
ing me conference. In the midst
of It. there was an ear-piercing
scream, and the-girl came hurry
ing in to say that Joan had fal
len off the porch and cut her Up
Margy rushed out.
This was Byrd's opportunity to
question tne doctor. She asked
if the baby weren't quite 111, and
ii argy ougnt not to get a nurse,

times," he said, with furrows ap
pearing oetween his - straight,
bnshy eyebrows. "Mrs. Duncan
has insisted that she. could take
care of . him now that she las a
maid." - : -. . - ' -
Byrd shook her head. '
'Then Mrs. Dancan saldvdme

"That's absurd." said Byrd,
anxiously. "Please Insist on it.

baby Is," he replied. "I should
have taken the matter into my
own hands."
Margy came back, carrying
Joan, whose under lip looked like
a great purple grape. The doc
tor looked at it and said it was
only a bruise.
Byrd carried Joan out of the
room. Joan's eyes, still drenched
with tears, were now brimming
with laughter at the funny things
Byrd was saying in her ear.
Byrd gave Joan her bath. Little
icy-hot gusts of longing swept
through Byrd as Joan's elfin,
soapy little body slipped bubble
like through her fingers.
Joan went through all her an
tics for Byrd's benefit, and Just
as she was standing on her head
In the middle of the bathtub,
Margy appeared.
"Jack's on the phone," she
said, in a troubled voice. "Just
because Dr. Newcomo Insists, on
a nurse, he's going to change
doctors."
"Let me talk to him," said
Byrd, with a hard note In her
voice.
"It's all right," she said a few
minutes later, coming back into
the bathroom. "I certainly told
him a thing or two."
But Byrd was uncomfortable at
the thought that Jack would take
her word rather than the doctor's
or Margy's. The obstinacy of
men!
Byrd worked like a Trojan all
day. She insisted tnat Margy lie
down after lunch. She promised
to stay until the nurse came.
Jack Junior was In the first
grade, and after lunch Byrd sat
down on the floor with him, ex
travagantly admiring the little
Indian village he had cut out of
paper at school. Margy was al
ways too busy to look at the cun
ning things he brought home
every day.
When toward evening. Miss
Sommer, a red-cheeked, - attrac
tive-looking nurse, arrived, ByTd
had all the vegetables prepared
for dinner and two dosen little
cup cakes, with chocolate Icing
baked for dessert.
Byrd longed to take Joan back
to the apartment with her for"
few days, but knew Larry would
object. And the Coronado had a
rule against young children. With
a sigh, she unwound Joan's cling
ing arms.
"The cat's whiskers!" Byrd ex-
claimed under her breath. "I've
got to beat It!"
As she put her feet on the ac
celerator, she noticed It was six
o'clock.
Larry was already in the apart
ment, but he had left the basket
of groceries standing in the hall.
Byrd picked It op and carried It
to the . kitchen.
"Just startng to get dinner?"
