Foss of Seattle spoke at the mis
sion festival held Sunday at Trin
ity church, at which ottering
amounted to $706.46.' The funds
will go to mission work, here and
abroad and to the general ex
penses of the church at large..
Mrs. Alvin Legard of Salem
sang a solo at the morning ser
vices. Following a luncheon served by
lira. Ennevoldson, Mrs. M. G.
Gunderson.'and Mrs. Otto Legard
In the church social rooms a
Young People's society program
was given. At this the Her. L. C.
Foss gave a short address as did
also his son, the Rev. H. L. Foss,
pastor of Thrinity church. Mrs.
Henry Torvend gave a reading
and the musical numbers con
sisted of piano solo, Ethel Larson;
saxophone solo, Elma Nesheim
accompanied by Florence Nes
heim; vocal solo Mrs. Alrin Le
gard. Following the program the
business meeting was conducted
by the president. Miss Esther
Towe. Plans were discussed for
the Luther League convention to
be held here during the last week
end in November.

SILVERTON, Ore.. Nov. 13.
(Special) Silvertonians were
either busy going or coming over
the week-end. The extra day of va
cation provided by Armistice day
gave many an opportunity to spend
the day out of town while it like
wise afforded obters who were
away to spend the two days at
their Silverton homes.
Coming home from the Uni
versity of Oregon for the week end
were Nina. Dena and Bertha Aim,
Norman Eastman, Jack Stranlx
and Orpha Nofsaker. Students
home -from Monmouth included
Helen , Dickerson, Dorothy , Neal
and Isabel McGinnis. Rodney Mc
Call, Chester Johnson, and Law
rence jonnson, who are ail em
ployed at Valsetz, spend the wek-
end at their Silverton homes.
Mr. and Mrs. Austin Eastman
and Lawrence Larson spent Sun
day and Monday at Woods, Ore.,
on a fishing trip.
. Robert Halverson of the Silver
ton service station and J. Oeder
were duck bunting at Devil Lake
and Mrs. Halverson, who teaches
in Salem schools, spent the week
end as guests of her parents at
Alsea. Mr. and Mrs. Rex Russell
were also at Alsea for the week
end. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Larson
spent Sunday and Monday at the
home of their daughter and her
husband, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Le
gard at Salem.

Great Success
SILVERTON, Ore., Nov.
(Special) The social given by
the Dorcas society at Trinity
church Friday night proved very
successful. Eight dollars were
taken in from the sale of fancy
articles, lunch and the fish pond.
Following the sale a program
was given consisting of a piano
solo by Palmer Torvend, two vo
cal solos by Mrs. Alvin Legard of
Salem, a quartet selection by
Francis Nelson, Cora Goplerud,
Sylvia Larsen and A. L. Larsen,
and a short address by the Rev.
H. L. Foss.
Mrs. Henry Torvend is presi
dent of the society.

present at the meting of the Zena
Missionary and Aid society at the
home of Mrs. L. F. Matthews No
vember 7. Mrs. Walter Broy of

Mrs. L. F. Matthews, president
presided.
Mrs. W. T. Scott conducted de
votions, ..reading the Bible "..ver
sion of a model woman. Mrs. R.
H. Scott gave a "vocal selection,
"The' Prayer Perfect." -followed
by a prayer by Mrs. Louis Randle
of Salem. Two new members,
Mrs. Alvin Madsen and'Mrs. J. D.
Walling, were enrolled. .
Mrs. Worth Henry, secretary,
read a letter from Mrs. R. C.
Shepard, who is in Hollywood,
Cal., for her health, thanking the
organization for their many kind
nesses to her In her illness.
Letter from Mrs. Hershel Wait
was read urging the Zena Mis
sionary and Aid society members
to attend the Womans' Rural
club Institute at Dallas November
14. 15 and 16. Mrs. W. D. Hen
ry, chairman of the committee ap
pointed to write the history of
the Spring Valley church at Zena,
asked Mrs. S. D. Crawford to read
the biography of Benjamin Wind
sor, early pioneer, which proved
to be very interesting. Mr.
Windsor hauled finishing lumber
for the church with an ox team.
Mrs. W. T. Scott read an article
written by her husband 'the Rev.
W. T. Scott, at one time pastor of
Spring Valley church, telling of
the program given to celebrate
the 50th anniversary of the
church In 1909. Mrs. S. H. Bark
er read notes on the church his
tory. Mrs. Matthews appointed
for the cafeteria supper to be giv
en soon. Mrs. Worth Henry. Mrs.
J. Fred Purvine and Mrs. S. D.
Crawford, as refreshment com
mittee and Mrs. Charles MeCar-
ter, Mrs. R. H.. Scott and Mrs. W.v
D. Henry as program committee
The meeting closed with several
musical numbers. Mrs. s. D.

(Special) H. R. Sharmon and
family are preparing to leave for
their former home at Anaheim.
Cal. Mr. Sharmon has been em
ployed at the Silver Falls Timber
company mill for the past year.
Other former Silvertonians also
make their home at Anaheim mid
surrounding communities.
All Silvertonians who visit Cal
ifornia plan to visit at Anaheim
and Fullerton because so many
former residents of Silverton are
now making their homes In these
two southern .cities. ,

The Lincoln-McKinley-Leslie

meet tonight at 7:30 o'clock In
the auditorium of the Leslie Jun
ior high school building. Dean
F. M. Erlckson if Willamette uni

(Special) One of the most en
joyable Father and Son banquets
in -several years was given by the
Masons In the Masonic temple
Friday night. Nearly 75 fathers
and sons were present.
Fred Evendon Introduced the
speaker of the evening. Professor
J. B. V. Butler of the Oregon
Normal school of Monmouth, who
spoke on "Get Together". He
discussed the fellowship of .fath
er and son. urging a closer com-
panslonshlp between them.
A vocal solo, "Sonny Boy", was
given .by- Miss Juanita Hicks, ac
companied on the piano by Miss
Rose Richards.
Jack Sanderson gave a read
ing, "America's Answer to In
Flanders Field." which was fol
lowed by a duet "I Don't Care"
by Juanita Hicks and Ruth Geer.
As an encore they sang several
high school songs.
After the program the men
and boys participated In a gener
al "mix", playing games and sing
ing. The committee which arranged
the banquet was Ray Tyson,
ehairman. Rex Mentley, C. R.
Peterson, Fred Evendan, E. J.
Hughes. Harold Austin, and Oli
ver Olson.

JEFFERSON. Ore., Nov. 14
(Spl) The annual high, school
carnival Saturday was well pa
tronized and proved a great suc
cess. It opened at 1 o'clock in
the afternoon and was to continue
until midnight, the program being
presented three times.
This program consisted of a
burlesque pantomime; directed by
Mr 8. Watson, a style show which
Mrs. Watson also arranged, and
a short play given by the French
class under the supervision of
Miss Bolderston.
The nations idea was carried
out by the various classes in
their booths. The seniors repre
sented Mexico, with tamales their
principal native offering; th ta
males were made by the women
of the Methodist cburcb. Chili
con carne was also sold, and a
fortune telling booth conducted.
The juniors, representing Chi
no. sold noodles, rice cakes, tea
and candy, and also told fortunes.
The Sophomores - adopted France
as their nation and sold pastry,
cider and punch and conducted a
bowling alley. The freshmen de
cided to remain Americans; they
sold Ice cream and candy and con
ducted a shooting gallery. The
Girls' league represented Alaska
and sold hamburger sandwiches,
hot dogs, coffee and popcorn balls.

ler, who died Sunday at his home
on Salem Heights, wlllVe held
this morning at 10:30 o'clock un
der direction of the G. A. R. from
the Terwilliger Funeral home, the
Rev. S. Darlow Johnson of the
Leslie Memorial church officiat
ing. Mr. Butler was a veteran of the
Civil war. having served in Com
pany D. 11th Wisconsin Infantry.
He was 84 years old. He was a
member of Sedgewick Post, G. A.
R.
He Is survived by his widow;
Frances E., one son, Kelton J.,
one stepdaughter In India, and
one stepson, J. G. Warrington of
Portland.
