BROWN THE story passed around re recently In connection with 'the yarn trading Rogers lornsby to the Chicago Cubs that . ack Hendricks, of the Clncy leds, once turned thumbs down on the Rajah when gWen first call on his serrlces, is being accepted ca new In some quarters As a matter of fact the story- Appeared fn this wandering eol- "imn a short time after the inci pient occurred which was last rprtng. At that time the New York Giants decided 'they wanted to be rid of the former manager of the Cardinals. Jack Hendricks was summoned to New York by the Giant officials and girena chance . to bid on Hornsby before his ser vices were put on the market. Hendricks refused to bid,, stat ing frankly that he did not care to have the star batter and sec ond baseman at any price. The story was, of course, prlnU ed in Cincinnati, and the odd and interesting ipart of it is that fans abided by Hendricks' Judgment.' ..And, speaking of the recent ' I lornsby development, the anti rlpated shifting of the confident one is bringing many interesting items to light. One Is the fact that the Cleve land club stood ready to lay the dough on the line for him up to $200,000 at least, although real izlng that thare was little chance of the' National league permitting him to pasa into the Junior organt " zation. Failing to get him. the Indian - also offered George Uhle and Joey Sewell. long outstanding . ftars of tjie Cleveland team, and some $150,000 in cash for Lou Gehrig, of the Yankees. This bid was . laughed off, it is said, by Miller Hugging and Jake Ruppart, who have been conspiring to gether of late years to give the Yankee fans one pennant winner after another. And with Bill McKechine on Ibe skids at St. Louts-discussion bobs up occasionally regarding Jhe possible - slants Brother Bill could put on the problems Horns by faced in St. Louis and some of ' the untold reasons for his de- - parture. McKechine led the team back to pennantville and then, because his team went to pot in the world's series, found himself be ing groomed for a quick let out. It was generally -accepted, when the Athletics put up their valiant but vain fight for the 1928 pennant, that Connie's team would be back in the field next year with a still more powerful ball club, thanks to strength ad ded during the season and young material coming up. It was also agreed that both Trls Speaker and Ty Cobb had sung their swan songs and would be among those missing. Now, however Wallle French, another seasoned gardener and one of the vets Connie was counting on. may be among the mlssiag andi not through any suggestion or de sire on Connie's part. French, after some five or six years in major' league baseball, says he wants to quit the game and de vote all his time to his business in Chicago. This may be a serious gesture on French's part. He is a West Point man, with the training and ability to, step into the wide world and make a success of him self. On the other hand it may be a dish of the usual mid-winter applesauce. HEtEWA RUBINSTtlW I THINK the very best way to go about attaining poise and " good posture is by first cul tivating flexibility and next learn ing the art of relaxation. Let's begin at the very begin ning, supple, easily-obedie,nt mus cles. If you've been troubled with aches and pains and crack ing joints, flexlbilty will seen a long way off, maybe- even an im posibility. However, take my assurance it is nothing of the sort. Begin by stretching. Do you realize, I wonder, that the most flexible, graceful creatures in the world belong to the cat family, and they, more than any other species, are constantly stretching and relaxing? So by- all means, as your first step to ward easy, graceful muscles, be gin imitating the cat. Now for bints on relaxation. First get the idea of relaxation straight in your mind. It doesn't mean slouching. A sloppy, slouchy carriage is as a matter of fact, infinitely more fatiguing than a good erect posture. Re laxation means a temporary re lease from the physical and ner vous tension which Xatigues your mind, wastes your energy, and adds years to your apparent age. Try these exercises to aid. you In learning how. to relax. 1. Stand with the feet well apart, arms hanging . loosely at your sides. Bend the right knee a little, throwing your weight up on the foot and stretching the left leg. Now let your body droop over to tbe right, muscles relaxed. Roll your body around in a circle from the right, left, front and back to the parting po sition. During this circular movement, let arms hang per fectly limp and let your head roll on relaxed neck muscles. 2. Stand with feet slightly apart, tbe left about five or six inches in advance of the right. arms at sides. Smooth out all tbe tensions from your body mus- NOTICE OF ASSESSMENT FOR THE COST OF IMPROVING TRADE STREET FROM THE EAST LINE OF FOUR TEENTH STREET TO THE WEST LINE OF SEVEN TEENTH STREET, IN THE CITY OF SALEM, MARION COUNTY, OREGON.
