Search for Anything Left Over Prom Bygone Years
Proves Fascinating Occupation for
Oregon Women
By GENEVIEVE MORGAN
OBVIOUSLY a place of pasts. Pasts of almost every conceivable
kind. Pasts that shrieked that they might rather have been
gone, done with, forgotten than merely things of the past waiting
again for a future. Violins hanging dissembled; unworried that the
dreamy young things who occasionally came and grasped so eagerly
found them not even imittlons from Stradivarius. Books all much
used and disused. Chairs sine legs
or arms, or maybe a back. Dishes,
dusty and broken intermingled
with others not so broken and
dusty. WoFn stoves, from which
ashes sifted to the floor.
Clothes, musty and not always
clean. .Shoes, old but patched.
Trinkets in heaps.
But why go on? Everything was
in heaps, almost. The ceiling was
low or so it appeared from the
manner : in which loaded lines
hung down. The room was small
but full, cram full. Full of every
thing and anything; of something
and nothing. One had to climb ov
er this to get to that. There was
scarcely a single isle.
To be sure, some new things
mingled with the pld. But one did
not see the new. How could one
in snch an atmosphere? Wasn't
the whole thing oppressive of the
old? Indeed, one , needed but to
shut one's eyes and see the shell
of a guant old man flitting about
snatching at this thing and that
thing which well meaning rela
tives had inconsiderately sold af
ter he died. Pasts. Pasts, waiting
for another future.
So this was where the well-to-do
were coming to spend their
idle pennies! The second hand
shop. Where poor people used to
come; haggle over prices and de
part bearing a "new thing" for
their home.- Where poor people
still came but not the poor
alone. Fine ladies, thoughnot al
ways beautiful, came now. The
odor of real perfume came to
hover with and be chased away
by the mustiness of the shop or
the smells that still emanated
from the untidy clothes.
Antiques! That's what they
were after. What care theyLwhere
they went so long as antiques
were the reward. Not things 20
years old. or 40 years old those
beds must be at least CO years
old.
A chair 75 years old ah! what
luck! How Mrs. Catty Corner
would envy. Seventy-five years
old! And if by chance one should
stumble on something more an
cient oh ecstasies.
Tables they were good to add
to the collection. But best of all,
most thrilling of all were those
trinkets of pewter and 'brass. And
better than best when unmolested
by polish. ;
Fine women tripping lightly
through the crowded, cluttered
little doorway, in search of the
antique. One can watch them
bite their Hps and sulk when the
nervous little shop owner tells
them "the junk buyer from Port
land was here only yesterday and
bought that old carved mirror I
never expected to sell."
Indeed, Portland women have
the craze: too, so the Junk man
needs must make those periodical
trips to the small-city to supply
Goofey Movies
1 I
the antique hungers of other fine
women.
The second hand dealer knows
his stuff, too. Those antique mon
gers couldn't begin to buy a dirty,
cracked old piece of croekery for
half the price that the poor man
can. The second hand - dealer
would tell one so himself.
Craze and fashion.. Women with
good perfume haunting dirty old
shops. Pasts wait no longer. The
other future has come; they go
to adorn he shelves or walls or
vacant corner of a twentieth cen
tury home useless decorations,
too old to help In the "business
of life and living but not too an
cient to be the delight of the own
er and want of the other sudden
ly discovered antique lovers.
A second future indeed.
