10 The New Oregon Statesman, Salem, Oregon, Friday Morning, September 28, 1928 floover Hears Two Sides To Question of Support In Northwest Farm Belt .-' By W. B. RAGSDALE Associated Press Staff Writer ; WASHINGTON.Sept, 27. (AP) -, A decidedly unfavorable report of s the political situation in the northwestern wheat belt war brought to Herbert Hoover here by Senator Lynn J. Frazier, of - North Dakota, after the republi can presidential candidate had re ceived encouraging news from such widely separated states -as " Wyoming and Florida. . Frazier, a republican member of ' the Progressive group in the sen ate who has endorsed Hoover's candidacy, said that the situation in North Dakota, was far from sat isfactory and that there was much r. discontent among the farmers. He added that; his information wai that a similar situation existed it South Dakota, Montana, and Min nesota. Protest Tote Large There is likely to be a big pro test "vote in my state," he said after his conference with the nominee. "The republicans have been promising farm- relief foi years and with my people farm re lief Is synonymous with The Me Nary-Haugen bill." I cannot believe that Governoi Smith will carry the state, but there is much discontent with wheat prices low. Some say the democratic nominee has a good chance in Montana, South Dako ta and Minnesota as well as in my . state. I do not know." Frank W. Mondell, a former representative from Wyoming, who called upon the candidate - during the day, expressed the be lief that Governor Smith had lost more votes than, he had gained by his sally into the west. Much Support Lost lt we concede that a consider able number of votes in the west were in doubt when the democra tic candidate started his tour, and the winning of those votes was the object of his trip," Mondell said, we are forced to conclude by re ports from the west that he has not profited any from his speech es. "His arguments were not con Tincing enough to win those" who were in doubt," he added, "and the word I receive is that many of the people who were consider ing giving their support to Smith were so disappointed in his fail ure to take a definite stand on the real Issues that they have now de-' cided to vote for Hoover." Mondell expressed confidence that Wyoming would cast her el ectoral vote for Hoover and Cur tis." Florida to go G. O. P. Belief that Florida would de sert the normally democratic sol id south was reflected in the Tiews of J. Leonard Replogir, of New York, and E. T. Stotesburty, f Philadelphia, who visited the nominee at his personal headquar ters upon their return from a trip in .that state. Replogle, who is a citizen of Flordia and is associated with the '-epublican organization in that state, said that "the sentiment for Herbert Hoover throughout the tate is amazing." Tariff Held Needed The condition of the vegetable md fruit growers of Florida for -everal jsirs has brought them to be conclusion that an adequate Protective tariff is necessary, he leclared, adding that they partic ularly needed protection against imports from Mexico, South Amer ica and the west Indies. "If Florida is not in the elec oral column for Hoover on elec- ion day X am a badly mistaken nan," be concluded. The candidate- spent much of he day in rounding into finai orm his speech to be delivered at Blizabetbton, Tenn. He is a little behind his schedule in its prepara- ion because of the number of coh erences he has been forced to lold since he started work on it. s a consequence, it probably will e several days yet before he com petes the address. grader 1.00 Peddyjohn, W.
