day took time out of Jubilee long
enough to identify photographs of
two men as those of his abductors.
As a result squads of detectires

a doctor and lawyer wboae names
were furnished by relatives of the
boys as among those who offered
to obtain the boy"s release. In ad
dition three other men, all charg
d with the kidnaping were In
custody. Kidnaping Is an offense
punishable by death in Illinois

! Helpful Hints
Here are some general hints on
good cake making. Use good ma
terials, -fine granulated sugar,
cake flour, and a tested recipe.
Measure f accurately. Cream the
butter thoroughly, add sugar gra
dually, and work it in until the
mixture is thoroughly creamy.
Add the; well beaten eggs, or the
well beaten yolks, if the recipe
separates the yolks and whites.
Mix and r sift dry ingredients, add
alternately with the liquid, and
beat well. Add flavoring and
beat. Fbld in the egg whites. If
they are r-seperated from the yolks.
Distribute the batter evenly over
buttered! tins, making a little in
denture ;ln the middle with the
back of i spoon, so that cake will
rise evenly. Bake evenly in a
moderate oven until cake is baked
and brown, and shrinks from side
of pan. f Turn out to cool on a
rack where air can reach all parts.

Favorite Cake Recipes
Following are some unusually
good cake recipes:
Caramel Nut Loak Cake: Cream
one-fourth cup butter aqd one cup
sugar, and add lour egg yolks.
beaten until thick and lemon col
ored. Dilute one-fourth cup eva
porated inilk with one-fourth cup
water. Mix and sift one and three
fourths (up cake flour, two and
one-half teaspoons baking pow
der, and; one-half teaspoon salt,
and add; to first mixture alter
nately with the milk. Add two
tablespoons caramel flavoring,
and one! cup chopped nut meats,
mixed wjth two tablespoons flour.
Pour into a well greased loaf pan
and bake in a moderate oven, 350
degrees Sfor 45 to SO minutes.
Serve plain or with caramel icing.
Caramel Icing: Mix together two
cups confectioner's sugar, two
tablepoons evaporated milk, two
tablespoons caramel flavoring and
two teepbons melted butter. Stir
until creamy. If too thick to
spread well, add more evaporated
milk, drop by drop.
Coconut Layer Cake: Cream to
gether three-eights cup butter and
one cup (sugar, sut togemer two
cups cake flour, three tablespoons
baking powder and one-half tea
spoon salt, and add this to the
first mixture, alternately with six
tablespoons evaporated milk di
luted witft an equal quantity of
water. Add one-naif teaspoon al
mond flavoring, and fold in the
stiffly beaten whites of four eggs.
Bake in' layers in a moderate ov
en, 375 Idegrees for 20 to 25 min
utes. Ice when cool with coco
nut icing.
Coconut Icing: Combine two
and one-half rups confectioner s
sugar, tfro tablespoons evaporated
milk, twjo tablespoons lemon juice
and one-fourth teaspoon almond

flavoring and stir until creamy
and smooth. Add one can moist
coconut, reserving about two ta
blespoons. Spread the icing be
tween layers, on top and over the
sides of cake, and sprinkle th
remainder of the coconut on top.
Pineapple Sponge Cake: Beat
four egg yolks, add one cup sugar,;
cream wen and then add one
fourth cup syrup from canned
pineapple. Add one cup cake
flour, sifted with one and one
half teaspoon baking powder and
one-fourth teaspoon salt. Fold
in the stiffly beaten whites of the
eggs. Pour into a greased tube
pan and bake in a slow oven, 325
degrees for about one hour. When
cold and ready to serve, fill center
cavity and cover top with pine
apple filling.

fronting 55 western railroads.
The union representatives spent
the day in informal conference dis
cussing the situation as createa
yesterday when the federal board
of mediation terminated Its efforts
to arbitrate the wage dispute on
grounds that the unions and car
riers could not agree.
The unions sought wage In
creases ranging from 10 to 18 per
cent. The railroaas countering
with an offer amounting to about
714 per cent contingent upon new
working rules. The unions said
they would accept the 7 Vi Pr
cent but not the rules. They ob
jected to. certain demands of the
railroads calling for double-header
trains and similar stipulations.
