GRAY EAGLE, "RIVERS PRIDE,
AGAIN TO TRY AGED WINGS
Old Time Steamboat Will be Used for ; Clearing
1 Away Mass
- " . Mouth
fTHE old Gray Eagle. Willamette
, will return to the ranks of active vessels, buMn a new capacity,
when within the next few days it is used to sweep out the sediment
from! the mouth of the Willamette siouga. . , . .
In the early nineties, when this vessel was young, Jt was the pride
of the Willamette river. It was the first boat in history to make the
ran between Portland and Salem
the year round. Many boats had
come and "gone, many had made
fast schedules in fall, winter, and
spring, but it was the Cray Eagle
that ! first hung, on all summer
and kept up with a regular sched
ule between Salem and Portland
all season.
The boat is now abpuC-40 years
old, it is estimated by Watchmak
er Law ton, who presides over it
month after month while it is
tied up along the bank of the
slough just south of the paper
mill.!
The paper company owns the
boat, having bought it a few
years ago from the Spaulding
Logging company.
It has been little used, however.
The Immediate cause of its being
returned to a new field of service
is the heavy deposit of waste that
has gradually collected at the
mouth of South Mill creek as It
empties Into the slough after
flowing past the paper mill,
j Deposit Mostly Pulp
The deposit consists almost en
tirely of cast-off pulp material
from the mill. It will be with the
idea of creating a current to wash
this away that the Gray Eagle
will be used In the near, future.
A wood fire will be built in the
old furnace and the old boiler
heated up, just as in the days wnen i
she showed her stern to every
boat ion the river.
.But instead of travel!-" with
her decks loaded with p ngers
and cargo,, she will renia.n tied
firmly in one place while her old
stern wheel turns Slowly around
to create the desired current.
Work has been going on stead
ily for the past few weeks, get
ting the boat painted and calked
