Almost on th eve of one of base. ball's genuinely "crucial" series, v t he Athlete, ot Connie . Mack caught up with the Yankees to. V day. It's been a stern chase and a v long 1 one since that day In July when the Yanks boasted a 13H game lead over the , field. It took the ringing bats ot the Washington Senators, and not Athletics, however, to rout the Yanks la two games today and end a stampede that has been on, but with slowly diminishing force, . sines last April. While Philadel phia trimmed the Boston Red Sox twice, the Senators whipped the Yanks 11; to 0 and 6 to 1, and shoved Connie's crew into an ab solute tie for first place. Both the ' Yanks and Athletics hare won 87 victories against 47 defeates. First Came: ! R H B Washington ........11 If 0 . New York ....... w . 0 S O Hadley and Ruel; Zachary and Collins. f; . Lomski, . In superb condition, piled up his margin through some terrific punching In the early rounds, but was hard pressed to maintain his advantage. Latzo apparently solved the style of the westerner in the closing rounds and was rapidly cutting down the lead when-the final bell sounded. The verdict in favor of Lomski was greeted with mingled cheers and jeers from the capacity crowd that attended. I Both boys started off at a ter rific clip when Lomski carrying the fight to his opponent and land ing effectlvely'with a right upper- cut that several times spun the McReynolds on first base, Heck- er at second and Jenks In center field, will be the new faces In the Salem Senators' lineup Sunday at Bend when the final championship series opens, it was announced Friday by Manager Leo Edwards. These boys haven's worn Sen- ator uniforms this year but they can hardly be classed as strangers. since they have played against Sa lem seven times in Albany uni forms, four of these games being played at Oxford Park. They'rs all speedy, dependable fielders and fair hitters. McRey nolds may not be Billy Sullivan's peer at bat, but he's dangerous at all times. The other two have higher batting averages than the men they replace. Jenks Is believ ed to be the fastest base runner in the league. Taking it from evry angle, the Senators are no better off and no worse off than -if the boys who have played all season had stayed; with the possible exception that the teamwork may not be as well Mled as It has been. But if the ?amea with Bend turn out to be pitchers' battles of the sort that :he Senators and Albany indulged in recently. Infield teamworlt may iot.be so Important. There are fewer self-made men now than formerly, observes an educator. Also, they've stopped putting bootstraps on" boots. anslng State Journal. 1 Bushel Box . on. Bartlelt Pears . OVC 4 lb.
