C&LTON. Cal., Aug. 16. AP)
The world's endurance swim
ming championship for women
rested tonight upon the shoulders
of a gritty mother of 36 years.
Mrs.", Lee Fourrler of Colton, who
today, at 2:66 p. m., emerged
from the outdoor plunge here
after a gruelling paddle of 5$
hours. 66 minutes and 30 seconds
- officially timed.
She was tired but happy this
mother of two boys as she relaxed
tonight after her long but success
ful battle to break the record of
64 hours and 28 minutes set in
New York recently by Mrs. Myrtle
Huddleston of Mattoon. I1L Her
physicians reported her In "very
good condition."
Mrs. Fourrler was ableAo walk
to her dressing room from the
plunge, and her mental faculties
were almost as alert as they were
when she started the long and
tedious grind. Just as she stepped
through the door of her dressing
room she collapsed, but was quick
ly revived and rushed to her home.
Three physicians said her condi
tion was not serious. She said
she "was feeling fine. Her low
er limbs were more tired than her
arms and were badly water
logged. When the 36-year-old swimmer
started on her endurance swim at
C o'clock last Tuesday morning
she set as her goal the mark of 60
hours. Today, however, after
paddling 1 hour and 28 H minutes
beyond Mrs. Huddleston 's record,
she gave up.
Mrs. Fourrler "carried on" to

ered a surprising feat for an en

Flouting hardships and sleepless

end of the plunge to the other,
she took food regularly at about
two hour intervals', chicken broth.
