navy's Innumerable activities and
gave the chief executive the bene
fit of his expert opfnion on a var
iety of subjects connected with the
i naval establishment.
! Coming to the summer White
.Rouse, following an invitation
from Mr. Coolidge, Admiral
t Hughes brought with him the lat-
est advices regarding all questions
connected with the fleet in the ex
pectation that the president would
review most of these. The presi
dent was reported as anxious to
consult with the chief of naval op
erations concerning legislative and
budgetary matters and eager to
' obtain his views on the involved
question of international disarm
ament. President Coolidge will be pre
sented tomorrow with a 125 pound
wheel of fancy Swiss cheesy by a
delegation of farmers from
Greene county Wisconsin.
The Superior Rotary club will
formally invite President Coolidge
tomorrow to attend the tri-state
fair which is to open here on
Labor Day. Other visitors will in
( elude a committee from the Wis-
consin association of postmasters.
President Coolidge has chosen
the 22nd of August to visit the
Apostle Islands. The trip will be
made in one day, during the
course of which, the chief execu
tive will cruise among the archi
pelago and visit the estate of H.
L. Gary of Kansas City on Mad

The so-called Dunne initiative
measure reducing motor vehicle
license fees in Oregon approxi
mately 60 per cent, can be with
held from the voters at the Nov
ember election at any time before
the ballots actually are printed.
This was announced here yes
terday by C. N. Laugbbridge, de
puty secretary of state, following
reports that an effort would be
made to have the issue advanced
on the supreme court docket. It
previously was indicated that the
supreme court would have to act
prior to October 1.
The circuit court for Marion
county held that it had no author
ity to withhold the Dunne measure
from the voters, and the case is to
be taken to the supreme court for
final determination.
The suit to enjoin the secretary
of state from placing the Dunne
measure on the ballot at the
November election originally was
field by the state, upon relation of
John Carson, district attorney of
Marion county.
Plaintiffs allege that the mea
sure, if enacted into law, would
be unconstitutional.

Roy C. Toombs, president of a
Chicago stock brokerage firm, and
head of a St. Louis insurance com
pany, was charged with grand lar
ceny of 9104,000 In bonds in a
warrant issued In SC Louis yester
day shortly after he had been dis
missed in municipal court In Chi
cago because there was no com
plaint against him. The warrant
accused. Toombs of taking the se
curities from his Insurance com
pany the International Life
and converting them to his own
use. He has not yet been rear
rested and his counsel, Eugene iL.
McCarry. said the governor of II
iinois would have to authorize the
arrest before Toombs would sub
mit.

ment the remaining gaps. Today
there is no serious threat to Eur
