to The New Oxegon Statesman, Salem, Oregon, Friday, 'August 17, 1928 1 S T IS PESSIMISTIC Western Oregon Products Not Worth Shipping East, . R. H. Shinn Says PORTLAND Ore.. Aug. 16. '(AP) R. H. Shinn, agricultural expert for the United states w a 1 tonal bank and owner of a 400 ncre farm in Polk county, was the irstf witness called by the rail vnaria at todav's session of the in- crstate commerce commission's ..earing on the application of the public service commission of Ore gon for an order directing the construction of a cross-state rail load from Crane to Crescent Lake. : The picture of farming in west ern Oregon, as a source of rail road traffic to the east was not drawn in favorable colors by Mr. Shinn. He said the apple business has been practically abandoned In the Willamette valley and west ern Oregon, mainly because of ap ple scab and other diseases impos sible to control in the moise cli mate. He also stated that prune shipments from Lane and Douglas counties were negligible because Washington and Idaho prunes bet ter withstood the shipping process and were preferred in eastern mar kets, j Mr. Shinn said the sheep Indus try was important but that few lambs raised in the more rigorous climate of eastern Oregon and Idaho were hardier and better for chipping. The witness said the Pa cific .coast did not raise enough hogs for Is own consumption and excess dairy products found Jtheir way mainly to California markets. Oregon's scenery, and particu larly its forests, find high favor in the eyes of Mr. and Mrs. Paul A. Herwig, of Milwaukee, Wis., visiting, Salem as guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Bosshard. Mr. Herwig. now retired, engaged in the printing trade for 52 years and was associated with Mr. Bosshard, now state printer for Oregon, 30 years ago, in that line of industry. This is Mr. Herwig's first visit to the Pacific Northwest and he - Is emphatic in expressing his ad miration of Oregon's scenery. He has made the Mt. Hood loop trip and a journey over the Roosevelt . highway and says that on the lat ter trip he saw, for the -first time In many years, a forest that could really be called such. The Roose velt trip be characterised as the -best yet." The Herwigs will leave next week for Seattle, from where they "will make the return trip over the Northern Pacific. While enroute to the coast, they stopped in Dal las. Texas to attend the annual convention of the Bahn Fret mu tual building and loan association, of which he is director. Incidentally, while in Dallas he met A. A. Lee, ' state Insurance commissioner and delegate from Oregon, and warned him that he might see him in Salem. Sure enough, he has renewed that ac quaintance. PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 16. (AT) Nicholas Pradanovitch. re ported in a dispatch from Bel grade as having died in Portland, and left an estate of $25,000,000 to a nephew, a prison guard, was not known here before his demise, according to the bestNnformation obtainable yesterday. While it was said that such a person might have lived here among his fellow Serbians, no record of his death . could be found nor the probate of such a will. If there ever was an Individual fortune of that amount In the city, the federal income tax returns make no mention of It, nor Is it . recorded in state or federal tax lists. It was held quite possible that he might have died here leav ing a nominal estate and under an ' Americanized " name.
