The stock market opened irregular
today, rallied briskly under the
leadership of the steel shares and
then turned Irregular again under
the weight of heavy week-end profit-taking.
Despite the absence of
many .traders and investors on,
summer holidays, trading was
fairly brisk for a mid-summer half
holiday session.
Favorable trade news temporar
ily offset the unfavorable impres
sion created by the stiffening of
money rates earlier in the week.
Weekly mercantile and trade re
views were genrally optimistic In
tone and stressed the unusual Aug
ust expansion in several of the
basic industries. The F. W. Dodge
corporation reported a record
breaking volume of new construc
tion in 37 states east of the Rocky
mountains in July.
Chrysler ran Into some selling
after yesterday's spirited advance,
closing 2Vt points lower at 92.
General Motors showed a fraction
al decline at 182 3-4. Packard and
Studebaker moved higher. With
the exception of a 3-polnt gain in
Houston, the oils showed little
change. Amusement shares receiv
ed better support. Fisk rubber
preferred issues again touched new
low levels for the year. -
Rails were rather colorless. St.
Louts Southwestern, which showed
'ndependent strength earlier in
the week, lost a point on realizing.
Southern 'Railway advanced more
than two points on a small turn

ver God-speed today in his quest
for the presidency.
Representing every state in the
union, it came streaming into Pa
lo Alto by airplane, automobile,
train and bus. Early comers
brought lunches and were at the
huge bowl when It opened at
noon. From that time until Ihe
notification exercises started at
3:52 o'clock, they filtered Into the
structure until that which at first
had been scattered groups of peo
ple had clustered into an expand
ing mass which extended around
the concourse.
Many brought umbrellas and
sunshades with which they shield
ed themselves from a scorching
un as they settled down for the

Others, not so
sighted, hid their faces behind
newspapers, whose whiteness con
trasted grotesquely with the brll-
lianr colors of dresses and sun
shades. Long before a blare of music
had signalled the approach of the

Hoover mounted the stand and
the actual notification ceremony
got under way. The candidate,
himself, was applauded enthusi
astically and frequently, but the
crowd listened with interest to the

Then, as he signaled that he
was nearing the end of his address
scores of persons, anxious not to
be caught in the final rush for the
exits, began moving toward the
tunnels, but for the most part the
huge assemblage remained to pay
a final tribute of applause to the

Although a canopy had been er
ected for his protection, the de
signers apparently were not fa
miliar with the course of the sun
and throughout his speech Hoover
got a taste of the almost blister
ing rays that beat down unmerci
fully upon the stands and resulted
in 3 0 women and two men having
to be treated for prostration at
the first aid stations established
around the stadium.
Scores of notables were among
the crowd, including members of
the notification committee, the na
tional republican committee and
others prominent in republican
circles. Among them were Gover
nors Baxter of Maine and Balzar
of Nevada.- California celebrities
included Governor C. C. Young.
Senators Hiram Johnson and Sam
uel M. Shortridge, and Represent
tatives Richard Welch and Flor
ence Kahn of that state.
