- sensationally dramatic, the 400
meters flnaL If-was only by a mar-
gin of eight inches that Barbutl
'.-staved off the' spectacular closing;
. rash of the Canadian, Jimmy Ball,
hut It was sufficient to send the

Barbutl went out "determined

' even If I had to pull It up myself
. He - did It by giving every - last
ounce of his marvelous running
powers and superb courage. In a
: fighting finish, sucn as nas set
dom been seen anywhere, the rug
ged Syracuse halfback, with the
flying Canadian gaining at every
stride, plunged his chest across
the tape, first by an eyelash mar
gin, then collapsed full length for
ward Into the red cmaers. - :
That falling finish, which left
the American with a badly sun
ned, arm, side and leg, perhaps
won for him. Had the race been a
, yard or two longer Ball undoubt
edly would nave won, out me com
bination of Barbutfs grit and the
fact that Ball started his finishing
drive too late was just enough to
keep Canada from scoring another
startling triumph at America's ex
pense.
First Flat Race Win
The victor, who took and held
the lead on the final turn, after
his teammate, Herman Phillips,
had set the pace to the halfway
mark, ran the race in 47 4-5 sec
onds, one one-fifth of a second
tlower than the Olympic record.
Not even the day when Paavo
: Nurnii suffered his first Olympic
' defeat since 1920. making a virtu
al gift of the 5,000 meters final
to bis countryman, Willie Ritola,
' could deprive Americans of - the
glory they have been looking for
in vain during five previous days
of trial championships. Yankee
backs were to the wall as far as
footracing was concerned. The
Americans had seen their men not
only beaten; but beaten badly,
- This' 400 meter race was the sole
remaining chance to pull an indi
vidual flat race victory out of the
fire, so It wasn't surprising that
all eyes at the start were on Phil
lips and Barbutl, or that the Yan
kees made the Welkin ring when
tbelr burly favorite came through.
Thrilling Ran
With Barbutl in the Pole posl
tlon and Phillips In the outside
lane, the Yankee pair lined up
with the Canadian, Ball, the Brlt-
- on, Rinel. and the German pair,
Harry Stortx and Joachim Buch
ner. Buchner was the man most
feared by the Americans but he
ran himself out chasing Phillips,
who burned up the track, running
the first 209- meters in 22 7-10
' seconds. Barbutl settled 'Quickly
Into his racing stride, stayed up
close until the far turn, started a
' bid that cut down the German pair
then Phillips, and swept Into the
stretch 100 meters from the tape
' with a good five yard lead. v- 1
With SO meters to go, Barbutl
appeared to be a decisive victor as
the Germans faded, but Ball sud
denly uncorked a wild spurt that
steadily and surely, cut down the
big- American's margin. With the
crowd on their feet yelling wildly,
the American; near exhaustion,
gritted his teeth and fought on as
the now flying Canadian cut down
his lead.
