And Paul took that absolute conviction from his own experience and from what he saw! The need of the Corinthians is duplicated by the need of men to day. Mankind is forever progress ing, said Goethe, but the individual i always the same. Always the same, he said, in that his essential measure of his life. Too once had mighty dreams which stirred like a bugle call dreams of doing a mad thing for the Iots of God. They hare been lost in the ruck and moil. In the turgidaess of days given to tinseled achievements and outward success. It Is this very loss of self -at tainment which grinds the heart. Hod does not wholly die. hut when we daily go to battle with weapons which are futile, defeat after defeat brings nothing but despair. We have been ingenious in devising means for conflict riches, honor, learning, pride of eye and lust of flesh; but they never have been sufficient. A greater self is still unsatisfied, be- casne It still is fettered. St. Paul calls you to claim your heritage. He asks you to claim your heritage. He asks you to en ter into fellowship with the Lord of Life: "He that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit." There Is the all-suffiicent power which will enable you to follow in the train of the All-perfect. Do you not see it? Do you not see that oneness with Christ means possession of His greatness? There is the way to peace and serenity, the mastery of true values and the might to enthrone the more splendid self. Heine in the "Buch der Lieder" tells of an awkward, miserable vouth who was transformed into ?race and noblesness by the pres ence of his lady love. But when she was absent, he became again the old, unhapp'y. awkward self. It is n allegory of man in the presence of Christ. Of course the mean and evil can have no place with Him and man becomes a new creature through union with Him. Does this seem mystical for practical age? Are we unwilling o see that the mystical is every where and is the most practical thing in the world? We are com pelled to acknowledge an inner life and are always trying to car ry its spiritual discoveries to other men. We create great organizations for the very purose of transmitting unseen and intangible ideas to our fellow creatures. You will dis cover gladiators dying to make sport In the arena, and you will then point to a day when the world began to turn (rom human degradation and every form of sTavery. You will find that philosophy and science and lit erature were transformed in their object and character; that legislative and deliberative coun cils of men were guided by strange spiritual imperatives; that the whole human race "turned their fac es toward an unseen world of jus tlce and freedom, mercy and right eousness. You will tind that s mighty dynamic of idealism was laid upon the souls f men, driv . 1 m ing tnem into great movements which have for their possibility the enthronement and authority of a divine consciousness. And you will say, you who are called to explain these fundamental phenomena of society, that they have their oricin and potency in Him vhn is the Lord of life, of Love and Truth and Brotherhood. This that is good is wrapped up in Him. and He is the central energy of every move ment which has lifted mankind out of the bondage of imperfection into the greatness of a free life. The quickening of the race has not been by conquest or war, not by enactment or formal reason, but always in the renewed visison of Christ. The fulfill ment and the reinforcement of life is in Him. ity, giving Him a date in time and place in racial kinship. He is there as firmly fixed as Caesar 01 Aurelius, and unfolding a story which weaves a spell of beauty on the ages. But the Christ of that record compared with the totality of the Christ of the present is no more than a fragment and a sug gestion. For in that record He is aot so much a central figure as He is a Power behind that record. As the phenomena of nature are produced by an unseen force, st the events of the New Testament compel us to seek the unseen force which made them possible. No mat ter what doctrines you discard, you can never get away from the influ ence Christ had on those who knew Him. The writers may differ in their reports, but not one neglects to say that Christ impressed him as divine and beautiful beyond any other man. that He flooded his soul with new power and opened vast unknown horizons for his spir- Whatever else He was, Christ was the mysterious Power behind the New Testament.
