Glory, glory, hallelujah! dory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah ! His truth is marching on. Every war has contributed a number of stirring sonrs and hymns, first made famous by the troops In the line of battle, but later taken up by the entire na tion, as a means of keeping up the morals and maintaining a high pa triotic feeling in the ranks. The Civil war was no exception and man of the songs which were fa vorites among the hoys of '! are still sung today. Mrs. Howe's "Battle Hymn of the Republic" is probably the best known hymn growing out of the Civil war and just as "The Star Spangled Banner" was Inspired while the author was under fire. "Tha Battle Hymn" was written after Mrs. Howe had witnessed a military review and had been sub ject to the attack of a southern raiding party. The words were written in Washington, after Mrs. Howe's visit to a Federal camp near the capitol. With a party of friends. she had gone out some distance from the city to witnese a review. The ringing tune deserved noble words and inspired Mrs. Howe to wish that she might write them. She was so impressed with the song on retiring that her wish must have follow el bet. in her dreams. She awoke in the ' gray dawn of the next morning, with the verses spinning in her mind. Fearing to lose tbem, should she fall asleep again, she arose and in the uncertain light of the early day scribbled them off. not looking at the paper in her hand. She returned to bed and fell asleep, unconscious that the al most illegible scrawl was the one grand hymn of the war, destined to place her among the best of American patriotic writer's. It is a strange fact that the tune, "John Brown's Body" which had so inspired her, was written by a southerner, John W. Steffe, of Richmond. Va., in 1855. for a fire company and afterwards used as a revival tune. FANCY SMALL Loin Chops 22c lb. FRESH Sliced Liver 10c lb. SMALL SUGAR CURED HAMS 22c lb.
