Com'l. St. TELEPHONE 220 IV. C. HAWLEY Republican Candidate for Renomlnation. i TO THE VOTERS IN THE RE PUBLICAN PRIMARIES: Congressman W. C. Hawley has remained at his post of duty dur ing the pending campaign, dis charging the trust committed to him by our suffrage in the previ ous election. Through the medi-l um of the press and correspond ence his friends have endeavored to fairly present the merits of his candidacy for renomlnation at your hands. We have been hand icapped by not having the mag netic and wholesome personal presence of Mr. Hawley in Ore gon at this time, but Mr. Hawley and his friends have full confi dence that you approve of the manner of the campaign made in his behalf, which has rested upon the merits of Mr. Hawley and not on the demerits of his opponent. There hes been, however, deep resentment on the part of many because of the unfair statements and misrepresentations of the op position, where every artifice known to the political trickster has been used, and It is only fair to point out some of this that the public may fully understand. The inference that the placards of the opposition, posted In violation of public ordinances, were removed by friends of Mr. Hawley was re futed by the police taking the credit and issuing notice of arrests in event of future violation. The attempt to discredit the appoint ment of Mr. Hawley is refuted by the fact of his appointment during his Incumbency on the greatest committees of Congress, including Agriculture, Labor, Rural Credits. The Budget. Appro priations and Ways and Means, where his prestige has enabled him to secure more than $41,000. 000 in appropriations and author izations of Federal moneys for public Improvements In the Dis trict more than has been secured in the entire history or the Dis trict prior to his incumbency and in addition thereto much oth er legislation beneficial to the District and its people. No person hut one densely ig norant or acting through un worthy motives would attempt'to challenge the value of the position Mr. Hawley has attained by be ing unanimously chosen by al' parties in the National House of Representatives to the Chairman ship of the Committee on Ways and Means. No Republican pa per attempts to question Its Im portance and value to the people of Oregon and Its industries, and one of the greatest independent and Impartial newspapers in the nation, the New York Times, stated on April 22, 1928: "Mr. Hawley is the first man from the Pacific Coaat ever to reach the chairmanship, which ranks above all other positions in the power of the House to give Its members except those of Speaker and majority floor leader. In the group over which he will preside are men chosen for their abili ties." etc. Integrity. high! intellectual Qualities, sincerity, and faithful adherence to the Interests of the people, are the mile posts along the worthy career of Mr. Hawley. and these are the guides to the voter on May 18. and his uniform courteous consideration of the rights of others, his tireless en ergy, his fair but bard fighting, his efficient and successful serv ice and his loyalty to the best tra ditions of his public office will Carrv him Intn irintnrv K S sweeplng majority.
