I I ROUTS UK ii J ford park diamond yesterday aft ernoon. - The Bearcats played in championship form from start to finish and after the third inning nerer failed to chalk up one or more hits and runs per inning Pitcher Led better of the Bearcat nine became better and better as the game went, on, fanning many of the McMinnrille lads. Willamette was the first to score In the second inning when the Led better bounced out a two base hit to center field, and after stealing third was brought in on a nacri fice by Diets. In the first of the third Llnfield followed suit and went one better than the Cardinals chalking up two runs. In the fifth inning it was just toe bad for the visitors. Hauk, first tc bitted, swatted out a hit to left field and a hit by Cardinal put him on second. Adams walked, filling the bases with none down. By this time the group of rooters were go ing hog wild. On Welch's infield grounder, Hauk vas put out at home. On a long hit by Girod to left field. Adams and Cardinal scored. Welch scored on Ledbet- ter's grounder to center field. On an attemDt to score. Girort was put out at home. A smash to right field by Diets scored Ledbetter. Linfleld up to bat and Ledbetter take them, one two three on scat tered flies. Willamette up to bat again, and they went through the same procedure as in the previous inning. In the eighth inning, Coach Keene put in several substitutes, Kuch for Roundtree, Ebenger for Dietz. and Satchwell for Cardinal. Friday the Willamette nine will play the Tacific university varsity at Forest Grove. The Badger3 are doped to win the championship this season and will give the Bear cats a real test The Pacific nine is made up of a hard hitting aggre gation backed with a loaded shelf of first class pitchers.TheBearcats have improved considerable duringi the last few days and will be no set up for the Pacific nine. They will leave Salem with only one thing in mind and that is to de feat the Badgers. On Saturday they will journey to Portland where they wilLtoss the ball with Columbia university. (AP) The lowly Seattle Indians knocked the Hollywood Stars out of first place by defeating them 10 to 4 in the series opener today. The Indians drove Fullerton and in three innings to pile up a safe Hulvey to cover and bunched hits lead. Score: R- H- E. Wee Jose Jurado, Bue nos Aires professional, compiled a sensational 69 on the Royal St. George course to add to his 75 ov er Prince's yesterday and led the field home with 144 for the two days qualifying play. , The players from the United States had no 69's in their bags as a majority slipped quietly in side the select circle of 110 to continue the quest for the title. Scores of 162 were needed to get under the wire with the low hun dred and ties. Larry Nabholts was the only pro to falter. The form er Clevelander who has been sick throughout the play, required 164 and was forced to join the gal lery with Joshua Crane and Silas M. Newton. Boston and New York amateurs who ventured into the 90's for a round and found them selves on the outside looking in. Crane needed 184 and Newton 169. Jim Barnes and Gene Sarazen tied for' low scoring honors among the representatives of the United States with 152 for the 36 holes. Walter Ilagen had 153, Bill Mehl horn, who led the field after the first day, 154, Tommy Armour, United States open champion 156, and Bob Stupple, Chicago pro, 161. . A famous master of the old world, Harry Yardon, paired with the smiling youngster, Jurado, from the new world, saw golf played as he played it in his hey day. Sandwich cheered Jurado as only this ancient golfing community- can hail a new star and surged about to study the source of his tremendous skill. The gallery- finally decided that the an swer lies in his powerful wrists. Jurado is making his second invasion., of Great Britain. He has never been to the United States but plans to go back to South America by way of the United States. STATE TRUCK MEET CORVALLIS, May 8 (AP) With 43 high school teams en tered, the second annual Oregon lnterscholastlc track and field meet at Oregon State collegenext Saturday will exceed in numbers the meet of a year ago when 40 schools took part. The eVent this year will see the largest array of high school athletes ever assembl ed in the state. Preliminary events will start at ten o'clock, followed by the Olym pic parade at 1:15 and finals at 2 p. m. Following the meet the varsity nines of the University of Oregon and Oregon State will play the second or a two game baseball series. (AP) Mike Hector, Los Angeles middle weight outpointed Georgte Dixon, Portland negro battler and won a ten round decision in the main event on a boxing card bere to night. Ringsidera credited Hec tor with seven of the ten rounds. Dixon, a notoriously heavy hit- tert did not trouble Hector after the first two or three rounds and the Los Angeles fighter bored in to outpoint his opponent. Battling Bulahan, San Francisco Filipino took a six round decision from Ftankle Britt, Tacoma, 132 pounder, in a whirlwind exhibi tion. Bulahan had Britt hanging on the ropes in the first and bell saved him from a knockout. In the other six round event. George Hval, Portland, 145 pounds, took a decision, over Harold Reese also of Portland. Joe Sleloff, Seattle, won on a technical knockout in the final round of his four round go with Kid Rose of Portland.; They weighed 138. George Ishii, Seattle, 118 pounder, stopped Buddy Thorn ton, Portland, In the first round of their scheduled four round match when he dropped tbe local boy for a count ot ten. . ERRORS PILE UP IN 21-20 GAME EAST SALEM, May 8 J (Spe-J clal.) In a free hitting game the fast East Salem baseball team de feated the Quinaby team by- a score of 21 to 20 In 12 Innings. In spite of the high score there were many good plays. ; Tbe East Salem team easily out classed their opponents, but the many errors of the Infield as well as the outfield were costly. BIG SCORE MADE IN GRADE EVENT In the first game of the season in the city grammar school league, the Garfield nine dropped the Washington baseball team by the wayside 34 to 14 on the Washing ton grounds yesterday afternoon. The game was interesting in spite of the fact that the Garfield nine took the game by a large margin. Both schools were out 100 percent in the rooting sections, demonstra ting plenty of life and pep. Much interest is aroused each year in the grammar school league, as nearly each team is as strong as the rest, each having the right to believe that it will win the cup. SALEM HieH BEITS DALLAS, SCORE 81 Coach Luke Gill's red and black ball tossers took the Dallas high school baseball ' nine into camp yesterday afternoon on the Oxford park diamond by a score of S to 6. The Salemites tallied in the first inning when Baker crashed out a hit to score Kitchen. Beechler. first sacker of the Salem high nine who has always scored a home run in previous games, failed to live up to bis usual form yesterday al though he did play a good game. It waa not until the fourth inning that the visitors were able to score. Hug and Lyons performed In the box for Salem with Bevens and Syron for the prune city. (AP) Mike McTlgue, warrior of many light heavyweight ring battles, and "Cowboy" Jack Willis, youth ful Texas slugger, fought to a draw in a ten round bout here to night that was slow and uninter esting in all sessions but the last two. There were exactly six punches exchanged during tbe first round Each got three. McTlgue hung on quite a bit. The referee warned the veteran Irishman repeatedly to show some action. Whenever Willis made an attack McTigue would tie him up. The sixth and seven sessions were fairly good, McTigue knock ing his opponent with a hard right cross. In the ninth Willis opened a cut under McTigue's right eye, but the cagey battler fought him off, and at the end of the round was carrying the battle to his op ponent.
