Corner High and Center I -o "Ftrst Meeting of Art Section of Salem League Held Mon day Evening The first meeting of the recent ly organized art section of the Sa lem Arts League as held Mon day evening at the public library. Miss Ruth M. Brautl, art director at the high school is section lead er. Miss Brauti gave a very inter esting talk which she illustrated with work done by her high school classes. She considers design and color essentials for the beginner. Art students first take up varia tions of primitive art, followed by lettering, figure work, and ar rangement of flowers. The art section will meet on the first and third Monday "evenings of each month. The next regular meeting will be held at the studio of Dr. Mary C. Rowland, at which time the section leader will con duct a sketch class in which all may take part. All persons, inter ested are invited to attend.! Features at Local Theaters in Observance of. National Music Week Young men and women of the city are offering musical features at local theaters each evening o' the week in observance of Better Music week. Lawrence Deacon, accompanied by Miss Elva Amsler sang Monday evening at the Capitol theater and John Medler accompanied byMies Lena Medler, sang at t he : Holly wood theater.- ""V. Last evening Miss Arbutus Ru di accompanied by Miss Amsler, 13 ' several vocal numbers at the Capitol. Miss Mildred Roberts played -a group of violin solos at &e Elsinore last evening, and Miss Eleanor Moore sang. The Sacred Heart academy or chestra will play at the Hollyoowd theater j this evening, and on Fri H. M. S. Pinafore Will Be Presented Friday Night at Salem High School Rehearsals for. the light opera, "H. M. S. Pinafore" are taking shape towards a most Interesting presentation of this classic compo sition in the high school auditor ium Friday evening. May 11, Leading parts will be sung by Miss Billie Cupper, soprano; Lu cille Cummings and Doris Glarke, l .ezzo-sopranos. These young wom en will take the characters of Jo sephine, Hebe, and Buttercup, re spectively. Young men vocalists and actors who will have prominent parts are: Lawrence Alley, as Ralph Rackstraw, leading man; Stanley Marves, aa the Right Honorable Sir Joseph Porter, ruler of the British Navy; Francis Gamble as Captain Corcoran of the ship "Pin afore" Harold Rosebraugh, as boatswain; Gwian Barham as boatswain's mate; and Joseph King, as Dick Deadeye, the ablest seaman. - Miss Ola Clarke is in charge of the financial management and sale of tickets. Keller Moore, assisted by Homer Smith, William Stolk, and can wooas win arrange stage settings and lighting effects. The public may be assured of a very pleasant evening's entertain ment in planning to attend this op era next Friday night. Mrs. Harold Cook Entertains Book and Thimble Club Mrs. Harold Cook entertained members of the Book and Thimble club Thursday afternoon in her home north of Salem. Baskets of lavender and white lilacs were arranged about the liv ing rooms. Mrs. Ray Lacey and Mrs. Charles Adams assisted the hostess in serving at the tea hour. Mrs. Flack and Mrs. A. J. Krue- ger were special guests. Members Young People Will Present Play at Willard Church The young people of the Center view. Community will present a play, "The Village Lawyer" at the Willard church Friday, May 11.
