OREGON DECLARATION DAY
I , Prof. J. B. Horner yesterday gave a new name to the event
that makes old Champoeg a shrine
: He called it Declaration day, in his address to the largest
iratherinz that was ever seen at the celebration of what has
' dflv and has been called by other

titles.
There, on May 2, 1843, the Oregon country, all the Pacific
jxrthwest from the crest of the Rockies to the shores of the
Pacific, and from the internatinal to the California line, was
by a vote of 102 men placed" under the Stars and Stripes, and
wrested from the domination of Great Britain. So it is ap
propriately Declaration day.
This Champoeg' shrine is to have a $300,000 federal mem
orial building: a historic highway is to pass by it
.And in all the years of the future increasing multitudes will
gather there in commemoration of the great event of that
historic May second of 85 years ago.
