"BUY IN THE ALLEY AND SAVE
TOLEDO. O.. April 21. Pro
duction and sales of Willys-Knight
and Whippet motor cars in Marcn
reached the "highest peak in the
company's, history, according to a
statement made here today by
Wlllys-Orerland executiTes.
During the month 32.T23 cars
were sold, a 17 per cent Increase
over the highest prerious month
This is a gain of 28.5 per cent oTer
Whippet and Willys-Knight sales
in March of last year.
March production of 31.129
units is the largest month in the
company's history. This is a gain
of 19 per cent over the previous
highest month and a 28 per cent
Increase over March of last year.
It was also announced that pro
duction of Willys-Overland pro
ducts reached the highest daily
mark in history on April 10 when
a total of 1.736 cars was pro
duced. This statement was made im
mediately following the introduc
tion of the new Whippet Six at the
lowest price ever fixed by any
manufacturer of six cylinder cars.
Production at all WlUys-Over-
tand slants has been maintained
at high tide since early "In January
when John N. Willys, president,
announced to the world that
"there can be no monopoly In the
lightcar field," and then slashed
prices on the Whippet which
placed the four cylinder cars in di
rect price competition with the
new Ford models.
This move resulted in the heav
iest buying demand in Willys-!
Overland history which has con
tinued without recession every
since. Each month since the Whip
pet price reduction, new high sales
and production records have been
made by the Toledo manufacturer.
, Scarcely less sensational was
the recent price reduction on the
new Willys-Knight Standard Six,
bringing a Willys-Knight Six un
der the $1,000 mark for the first
time in history. It was $tated at
the factory that this move has re
sulted in an increased demand for
the Knight-engined sixes since it
opens new market for this type
of car to buyers Who were form
erly prevented from owning a
Willys-Knight six while they sold
in a considerably higher price
range.
With the introduction bt the
new Whipnet Six, equippedwith
a highly developed engine featur
ing a seven-bearing crankshaft.
the interest 0f the buying public
in inis new car is reflected in the
Hundreds of thousands who vis
ited the various Willys-Overland
showrooms throughout the nation
at Its initial showing.
Well informed automobile men
declare that the introduction of
the new Whippet Six with a seven-
bearing crankshaft will undoubt
edly set a, new trend toward high
er quality in the lower priced
sixes. At the time he announced
the' new car Mr. Willys said that
it was in line with the company's
policy to incorporate features of
higher priced cars in the lower
price ranges.
It is reported that employment
at all Willys-Overland plants is at
opacity, with 19,500 on the fac
tory payroll at Toledo. This i3 20
percent higher than any previous
employment figure. It was said.
