Dear Friends:
I will try and give yon an idea of what kind of a trip we had.
When we arrived at Weed, Calif., it looked as though we were going to stay for
while as It was raining hard. The road between Weed and Redding, Calif., waa
fcad with several miles under construction. We stayed at Redding the first night.
Leaving Redding the next morning la a hard rain with a head wind blowing about
SO miles per hour. The water was over the highway In deverat places before we
reached Sacramento. We made several detours and drove through lots of 4 water be
fore we reached Stockton. The wind was blowing very hard all day.
We left the pavement at Bakersfleld and It was necessary to use chains for
about 60 miles and very slow going. The weather was ideal across the desert. At
Williams, Arizona, we drove to the Grand Canyon where we spent most of the day
March 28. There was some snow la the mountain passes but the roads were very
good.
It was real cold at Santa Fe, New Mexico, and continued until we reached
Trlntdad,' Colorado, from there the weather has been too warm for comfort. The
roads were exceptionally good through Kansas. Our longest day's drive was from
Syracuse, Kansas, to Kansas City, Mo., a distance of 580 miles. We made wonder
ful time between Kansas City and St. Louis but were In a traffic Jam in St. Louis
for two hours. ' Pontiac, Btyehlgan. 1 the busiest place I have ever seen. w
buildings of. every kind are being constructed. The Oakland-Pontiac factories are
behind with orders and working full capacity. Tomorrow we will visit the General
Motors proving grounds.
Our speedometer registered 3802 miles from Salem to Pontiac and we made the
trip in nine days. We used 208 .gallons of gasoline and changed oil twice, adding)
sjta. on -the entire trip, with no expense on the ear whatever. Our expenses for gaso.
line were 847.78; our motor oil 85.50, making a total of 833.28. The Oakland is
running perfect and we expect to start on our return trip, April 5. acobsoa's wffi
get their new Pontiac sedan tomorrow. We will leave them at Chicago.
