composed of the outstanding sen
ior English students at the high
school, presented the last two of
a group of four plays hefore an
assembly of the senior class Mon
day morning.
One production, "Doctor Cure-
All," is well known In Salem, har-!
ing been presented here on nu
merous occasions. Muriel White
adapted the play for the class'
showing, those taking part being:

Lena Widick and Minnie Ilese

"Gold Mounted Guns,'.' was the
other skit introduced, adaption for
the senior's use being made by
Floyd Albin and Annabel Tooze.

the characters.

Announcement Concerning
Latest Work of Lady
Holmes, London
LONDON. April 2. ( AP)
Roast pig is the inspiration and
subject for the latest opera, the
work of Lady Holmes, wife of Sir
Charles Holmes, director of the
National Gallery.
In the music one can hear the
pig becoming roast pork. The
crackling of the flames, the siz
zling of the roasting meat, even
the drip of the gravy, all are de
picted by string instruments.
The opera is based on Charles
Lamb's essay which tells how the
human race first learned there
was such a thin? as roast pig,
w hen Bobo accidentally set fire to
his father's house, and burned the
pig inside it. In trying to pick up
the burned pig he scorched his fin
gers, and putting them into his
mouth, found the taste of the pig
delicious. Thereafter for a long
time, whenever the people ofj
Bobo's country wanted roast pig'
they burned down their houses.
It is ironic that Lamb's essay
should have furnished the subject
for a musical composition, since
Lamb detested music, and said
that no intelligent person could
like it.
Only string instruments are em
ployed byLady Holmes to produce
her effects. London critics sug
gest that the mouths of wind in
strument players might water over
the idea of roast pork and render
them unable to play.

PORTLAND, Ore., April 2.
(AP). The government has -full
control and ownership of San Is
'and at the mouth of the Columbia
river opposite Fort Stevene.
This was the decision banded
(own today by Federal Judge Bean
giving the government the right to
regulate and issue permits for the
fishing rights of the island, not
only of the highland, but also of
the tide land.
The decision wae entered in the
rase brought by the government
against the Columbia River Pack
ers' association and the state land
board to establish the right of the
government to control the Island
and the lack of authority on the
part of the state to issue a fish
ing license to the Columbia River
Packers' association f or the use of
the island.
The position of the defendants
was based upon the fact that af
ter the island bad been ceded by
the state to the government in
1864, congress had never express
ly or by Implication accepted the
gTant nor recognized it. therefore
it waa not effectlTa. . ..
