miming or rood? Most every
one dos, more or less. Might be
lots of It Is merely habit, but some
habits take a lot of pampering.
But food; well, it's an art to plan
and buy and prepare food so the
whole family, or even the single
individual, will enjoy it.
Take, for instance, thoee vege
tables that the market writer is
continually pointing out. There
are some cooks who don't seem to
realize that right now isn't one
whit too early to buy all kinds of
fresh vegetables with which to
help furnish the table. Sure, plen
ty of them, even If they don't
come from right arounrfSalem.
It'll be the local truck garden
er's outing in a few weeks now,
but meantime, garden centers
from the north and south are do
ing their best to see we folks don't
go vegetable hungry.
Hereinafter Is partially describ

ings that local merchants have se-

may not be that every grocery
store has the whole ramut of the
present line-up, DUt tney re nere
In Salem somewhere, and it's only
np to Mrs. Cook to find 'em.
New potatoes and new peas are
still recent enough to be a novelty
to many household tables; in fact,
there must be lots of places where
they have not even been taated
let alone eaten this spring. -But
they are both here in Salem
stores, and the peas, particularly,
are getting better every time a
new shipment arrives from the
California fields. That's not dis
paraging the new spuds; they've
been good from the start, as new
spuds go.
The Irish kings . come two
pounds for '25 cents, and there
abouts now, in striking contrast
to the low price of the old crop.
New peas, too, are commanding a
good price but not too high con
sidering their newness to the mar
ket. How does rhubarb pie, or even
Just good old "pie plant" sauce,
sound? If you nave an aversion
to things hot-housey, as has been
the rhubarb up until a few days
ago, forget it. For now, at eev
eral stores, rhubarb grown out
doors in California may be pur
chased, two pounds for a quarter.

You'll notice, that in contrast
to the pretty, delicate stalks char
acteristic of the long hot house
variety, the new out door crop
looks small, to say the least. But
don't let that keep you from buy
ing the outdoor kind, 'cause you'll
probably find it more delicious
than the other.
Speaking of things red, the new
radish crop is still somewhat slow,
but the price is reasonable and
probably won't be long until the
local radish will supplant those
shipped in from the earlier grow
ing centers.
Asparagus, firm and clean look
ing, Is coming in faster, and the
week end shopper will have no
difficulty in getting as much as
her needs require. This is com
ing in from California.
Despite the fact these delicious
stalks and they do cook up deli
ciously have only been on the
market a couple of weeks, price
has already begun to decline, so
you won't have to pay so much
for this vegetable this week as you
did last.

may call It all In one load?
That's only what one local mer
chant has secured direct from the
fields at Roseburg to offer to the
trade this week. You never saw
cuch solid, perfect heads, either.
The price Is down, too, and even
such splendid heads as these we
say only cost 15 cents each. May
be you can beat that, by looking
about a little while you're making
that Friday or Saturday shopping
tour. We noticed some heads,
though not eo good looking and
to which there would be a little
'waste, for two for 15 cents.
Cabbage, too, is coming in in
better shape all the time, the
heads that will be offered this
week end being small but pretty
solid in the main. This is the new
crop from California; and being
new, it's bound to be the nicest
crisp cabbage you've used for
some time.
New carrots, grown in Califor
nia, have been! offered by grocers
for several days. They're those
bunches that look so pale and
small alongside the big orange
colored ones that have dominated
for so many weeka now. The
winter crop is still In fine shape
too, but some buyers just natur
ally prefer those the newest.
The new spring carrots sell three
pounds for 25 cents, considerably
more than the old ones
pounds for 15 cents.
Parsnips, beets, rutabagas and
turnips are all still available In
goodly number and in fine condi
tion, and prices, in the main, at
at four and the remainder comes from
California, shipped in Ice to reach
here in good condition. The spin
ach grown in the gardens about
Salem is as fresh and fine as any
lone could wish although the pick-
the same low level of recent weeks.
Cucumbers, thongh of excellent
i quality and worth the efforts of
the most discriminating salad ma
ker, are still somewhat scarce and
of a price putting them above the
average purse.
Tomatoes continue to be sup
plied by Mexico in quantities suf
ficient to meet the demand. These
tomatoes are of good quality, and
keep excellently, too, when you
stop to think, about the distance
lng has not yet reached the heavy
season.
Mustard greens may also be in
cluded In the list of groceries for
the week end. They are local and
I fine.

Green Is White
Today
At six o'clock last evening it
was discovered that the paper
we' had for our Green Section
was white. According to oar
records there should have been
plenty of green paper In the
warehouse to run off today's
issue, but a careful check
proved that the rolls thought
to bo green were white so the
Green Section is white today.
We will have more green paper
here for next week's issue.

Two Matinees
At Elsinore
Once more the readers of
the Green Section, who patron
ize the advertisers will be
privileged to enjoy two mati
nees at the Elsinore. The next
question will probably be, "And
what will be the shows?"
The first matinee will be
held Saturday afternoon with
a showing of the picture "Body
and Soul" featuring Lionel
Barrymore and Aileen Prlngle.
This la said to be one of the
most dramatic pictures ever
placed on the screen. Thrill
ing ski rescue scenes add to the
picture as more than a hundred
men on sklls dash down the
mountainside all carrying blaz
ing torches.
In order to gain admission
to the Elsinore for this matinee
on Saturday a sales slip for one
dollar from some advertiser In
this Green section, the correct
coupon and ten cents must be
presented at the box office.
The second matinee will be
on Monday afternoon at which
time the correct coupon, t
sales slip for one dollar from
some advertiser In this Green
Section and fifteen cents must
be presented. '
The Monday afternoon mati
nee features Fanchon and
Marco's Idea tha Pied Piper';
with his fifteen rascals as well
as the picture "American Beau

a million dollar husband, but
fate pricked her bubble of bluff
