-, THE OREGON STATESMAN, SALEM, OREGON, TUESDAY MORNING, MARCH 20, 1928 lOIOUS DISEASES NDT SO PREVALENT Measles Principal Item On Month's Report; Births Reach 95 Total With the exception of measles, arlet fever and tuberculosis, ommunieable diseases in Marion ounty for February showed a de rease over the same month of last ear, according to the report of r. Vernon A. Douglas, county ealth officer. The report was pre nted at the meeting of the exe- utive committee of the Marion '-ountyhealth nit Saturday noon. Present were Judge John Sieg mund. Frank Neer, T. M. Hicks, -!r. William DeKleine. and the , health officer. A decided Jump was noticeable n the cases of measles reported, a :otal of 21( as compared to 3 for February. 1927. One reason for rhe large numbers of measles cas 09 reported was the cooperation of parents In notifying the health officer. when measles appeared In he home, and also the reports of local- physicians, the officer's re port states. There was one more case of scarlet ferer last month than in February 1927. and the 11 cases of tuberculosis meant an increase of 4. Only two cases of diphtheria were reported last month, as com ' pared with six during the corres ponding period of 1927. The de crease in this disease has been no ticed consistently through the months of 1927 and up to Febru ary 1928, Largest decrease In the two months' figures was noted in In fluenza, with 41 cases in Febru ary, 1927, and none last month. Whooping cough fell off from 17 cases In 1927 to only 2 in Febru ary of this year. There was no ty phoid ferer last month, and 9 cas es a year ago. Other diseases and cases report ed last month are: small pox. 1; pneumonia, 2; erysipelas, 2; gon orrhea. 1; mumps, 3; meningitis. 2; chickenpox. 17. Vital statistics recorded by the health officer for February show 80 deaths for the month, a de crease of 16 over the previous month and 6 less than February. 1927. Causes of deaths were: 31, diseases of heart and blood ves- Fels; 11 diseases of nervous system 6 cancer, 4 kidney disorders; 12 communicable diseases, including 6 tuberculosis, 3 pneumonia, and z meningitis. February births reached the un usually large total of 95. 19 more than in January and 23 more than February. 1928. For the month of the report, births succeeded deaths by 15, .while in January deaths were greater by 17. Forty of the February babies were males; par ents of 36 make their homes in Salem. The country health officer made 34 0 vaccinations in February and 4aa toxin antitoxin immunizations. Other activities, as covered in the report; are: Mileage: c!y. 30: county, 1.110.
