CHIEFS' MEET SOON
FIRE FIGHTER LEADERS GO
TO MARSH FIELD, JUNE
NEW YORK, Mar. 17. (AP)
There was no hope left today that
the transatlantic flight of Walter
Hlnchllffe and Elsie Mackay had
ended in anything but disaster, but
no faint clue was overlooked in
the determination to exhaust ev
ery possibility of rescue.
During the day the Canadian
legation at Washington requested
permision to send aircraft across
the border to 6can the Maine
woods where a plane had been
heard Thursday morning and the
permission was granted.
The faint hope that the transat
lantic plane had been brought
down in these woods and that the
fliers might be still alive but un
able to find their way out was
kept alive by confirmation of yes
terday's reports of a plane above
the woods.
Minister of Marine and Fisher
ies Cardin at Ottawa was informed
by telegraph by the Canadian Pa
cific superintendent at St. John, N.
B.. that two men in a lumber
camp near Greenville, Maine, still
insisted that they had heard a
plane about six o'clock Thursday
morning. This would be at the
very limit of the time which Hinch
liffe and Miss Mackay might have
stayed in the air on the flight
which began in England Tuesday
morning.
On eof the earliest young song
sters In a church choir I once
knew, sang out boldly, impetuous
ly, on a not that wasn't there at
all. People tittered, and he felt
woefully conspicuous. Indeed he
had never felt so silly. But he
quick-wlttedly saved his face by
giving a startled look at the sing
er behind him. This hoaxed the
congregation Into thinking It was
the fellow behind who had hit the
wrong note.
When a man habitually boasts
about himself, his motive Is the
same as that or tne resource rui
choir singer. .He talks about one
thing to obscure something else to
make you look the other way. It
he brags about his money, he may
be trying to make you overlook
his .lack of education, or culture
Sometimes his efforts are as ob
vious as if he came right out and
said:
"You probably think I don't
amount to much because I don't
look the part. But I've got a wad
of money, including four automo
biles, superfluous servants and a
plug hat."
I know a young man who com
plains of the stupidity of his busi
ness associates. He declares that
they are always plotting against
him because Jealous of him. When
he loses his Job, as often happens,
he blames the rest of the world for
not recognizing his genius. All
this is a screen for his own de
fects.

No one needs to be concerned
about proving what he knows he

It isn't the innocent, but the

On a subway train, an uncouth
little chap who had been drinking.
insisted that another passenger
was taking up too much space.
"Get over there." he snarled.
and poke dhis elbow at the other
man's stomach.
"I beg pardon," politely re
sponded the passenger who had
been chugged in the stomach, and
he moved over as much as he
could.
Then I chanced to recognlxe the
second passenger. It was James
J. Corbett. ' While he may not
have been in quite the physical
fettle that he was when he
knocked out John L. Sullivan, at
New Orleans, there was, of course,
no question that Corbett could
easily have slapped the other fel
low's face so hard that he would
have gone through life wondering
what happened.
Knowing that he could do this.
Corbett didn't need to do it. He
was well aware of his ability to
assert himself. His pride was not
in Jeopardy.

MENTAL FATIGUE
Many people wonder why
they quickly tire at work
while other people enjoy the
vigor of early morning all
day long and do not become
fagged out. This annoying
brain fatigue is often due to
the fact that they1 have
worn their glasses past the
period of usefulness and
physical and mental fatigue
quickly result. Continued
neglect of the eyes is invar
iably the cause of nervous
ness, headaches and often
indigestion.
