There was no hope left today that
the transatlantic flight of Walter
Hlnchllffe and Elsie Mackay had
ended in anything but disaster, but
no faint clue was overlooked in
the determination to exhaust ev
ery possibility of rescue.
During the day the Canadian
legation at Washington requested
permision to send aircraft across
the border to 6can the Maine
woods where a plane had been
heard Thursday morning and the
permission was granted.
The faint hope that the transat
lantic plane had been brought
down in these woods and that the
fliers might be still alive but un
able to find their way out was
kept alive by confirmation of yes
terday's reports of a plane above
the woods.
Minister of Marine and Fisher
ies Cardin at Ottawa was informed
by telegraph by the Canadian Pa
cific superintendent at St. John, N.
B.. that two men in a lumber
camp near Greenville, Maine, still
insisted that they had heard a
plane about six o'clock Thursday
morning. This would be at the
very limit of the time which Hinch
liffe and Miss Mackay might have
stayed in the air on the flight
which began in England Tuesday
morning.

not recognizing his genius. All
this is a screen for his own de
fects.

pected to decide In the near fu
ture on the question of whether

mit to operate a dance hall at
Olenwood Park, Just north of Sa

The annual meeting of the Ore
gon Fire Chiefs' association will
be held at Marshfield June 7, 8
and 9, according to announcement
made here Saturday by a commit
tee representing the association
and Clare A. Lee, state fire marshal.
Among the principal features of
the program will be a series of
motion pictures of the different
fire departments of the state in
action. There also will be demon
strations and exhibitions by the
several departments. A school of
instruction will be held each aft
ernoon. The convention will close
with a seafood dinner.
The speakers will include H. H.
Pomeroy, arson investigator for
the state fire marshal's depart-
ment; James A. McCune of the
Oregon rating bureau; -Tom Gra
ham, chief of the Corvallis fire
department, H. H. Sanderson and
Mr. Lee.
Representatives of the associa
tion here Saturday were Roy El
liott, Med ford; Ivan Pearson, Mc
Minnville; William E. Nusbaum,
Eugene; C. J. Baughman, Ash
land; R. L. Gilson, Lebnon; Hen
ry Lococq, Marshfield; Harry Hut
ton, Salem, E. A. Taylor and Mr.
Lee. With the exception of Mr. Lee
and Mr. Taylor all are connected
with fire departments.
Registration Close Early
In Portland Legal. Ruling
The county clerk of Multnomah
county is complying with statutory
requirements by closing the regis
tration books 30 days prior to
holding the special election on
April 9 in connection with the pro
posed merger of the properties of
the Portland Electric Power com
pany and the Northwest Electric
company.
This was the substance of a
legal opinion handed down here
Saturday by I. H. VanWlnkle. at
torney general.
Mr. aVnWinkle held that inas
much as the special election, affects
only the City of Portland, regis
tatlon In that particular district
must be suspended. Persons re
siding and voting outside of the
city of Portland may register in
the usual manner until the official
