B.aBoydston, Independence. (By the Content Kditor.) The climax In The Statesman's special Wbippet prize in the auto contest comes next Monday. Mi '7 : Ik - l 1 .Thelma Haugen, Woodburn, lead er in Stateman's Auto Contest today. Thelma Haugen of Woodburn Is the leader in the whole contest today. This, popular young lady is prominent resident of Woodburn and is well and favorably known not only in that city but in the entire surrounding country. Her father lias been in the real estate and insurance business in this community for some time and has made a host of friends. Thelma is building up an or ganization that is gaining strength daily. She and her friends expert to gain enough momentum not .only to win the Whippet but the Oakland at the finish of this great contest. Her friends are not only wish ing her success but are sending in their coupons and their sub- " scriptlons every day. She is to be congratulated for the splendid ef fort she is making. j This will be the close of three weeks of enthusiastic work and hustling on the part ot the candi dates in The Statesman's big au tomobile contest. The Whippet ampaign will culminate in the Jlnal scene Monday,-March 12, at midnight. There la; a magnificent $687.00 Whippet coach which will be awarded to the candidate that secures the. most money on old or new subscriptions for the three weeks ending that date. Never before in the history of Marion and Polk counties has there been ouch a distribution of awards as this Whippet coach and the otfier prizes, and never before has there been Buch an exciting battle to win them. First one candidate leads and then another candidate, then a candidate from 'Veil down in the list will take the : lead and set the pace for the race for a time. Notwithstanding any report to the contrary, nobody has any of the prizes cinched in the race. The grand final winner for the Whippet will probably be de termined by the subscriptions turned in between now and Mon day. March 12, at midnight. An Exciting Finish In order to be 'air to every one, contestants outside of the city of Salem will be allowed place their last report in the mail not later than midnight Monday, March 12, the postmark on the letter will be considered as satisfactory evi dence. All candidates are now devoting every minute of their time to get ting in all the votes before the 'closing hour, and the enthusiastic boosting of their friends is prov , ing an important factor in the , race. The awarding ot . this special Whippet prize will be the biggest current event in Marlon and Polk counties. Interest bor dering on excitement will prevail all day Monday and op to mid night, Monday. Some Hard Workers Zelda ParriGh of Silverton is making a wonderful race. Her enthusiasm is so spontaneous that it becomes contagions and it brings new friends to her banner every day. We predict that Zelda will be a very serious contender in the finals. JDorie Barnett ot Aumsrille has Jumped into a foremost place and has wonderful potential possibili ties if she would make the neces sary effort to organize her friends and her own time for the next few days. Delores McKinnon of Stayton and Mrs. J. H. Johnston of Lyons are active, and we expect to bear from them shortly. We believe that they have the ability to gain a high standing in the contest if they will work consistently for a few days. We received quite a number of voluntary votes for Miss Margaret Berndini. Thi3 young lady must have a considerable number of friends in various parts of this district. Votes are coming in for Nina Williams and Gladys McDonald by ! mail from parts as fardistant as Los Angelas. Hazel McMorris also received a number of votes today from San Francisco, Calif. IEGION MEN ACTIVE IX IXTER- CITY REIATIOXS In addition to the many other services of a public character which it performs, the American Legion is an important factor in inter-city communication and friendly relations. Visits between legion posts are frequent, an ex ample being the trip made by members of the Salem po3t to Eu gene last night to assist in an in itiation ceremony for the Eugene post.
