I am v - . - fjv . aeaaa am mm at m . r ; DY FPEDC ' Ir- The -Want and i. v. . '.-..J. , 1 a i THE FUN OP BEING EXCLUSIVE People who can afford to trarel " usually think that eren the sun sets In distant parts of the world are more beautiful than those to be , found In any: of the favorlts spots of their own eountry. They figure that foreign sunsets must be bet ter because they cost more to see. Most folks hare a detestation for Mhe thing called commonness. Peo ple often declare that a certain kind of cloak or a certain kind of automobile Is all right, only It Is -too common that is, too many other people are capable of owning the same thing. When too many , people can buy a thing there Is little distinction to be gained from haying it. Ton, perhaps, are willing to pay more for a set of books, if they (' are of a special, numbered, limited ' edition. The merit of the book is ; not really injured by the fact that ,i a limitless number of other per ' sons own one like it, but there I? s nothing exclusive or distinctive ; about haring such a book. Here, let us say, is a hat costing The Daybook OF A New Yorker BY BURTON RASCOE t - (Zxclnsive Caatral Press Dispatch to t The Statesman.) J NEW YORK. Mar. 27. It does ( not Quite seem possible that money-mad New Yorkers are as care ; less as subway changers' figures ; Prore them to be. During the month- of January, Innumerable five-dollar gold pieces were drop- ped into the nickel-slots by mls ! take, and rery few of them were ! called for by the owners. O f 1 course, the station agent is five ' dollars to the good every time this r happens. If the careless one does J not return. The subway crowd, as " the cartoonists see it, is a soul- less and penny Itching bunch, but - decent enough to let the poor wretch of a money changer reap the benefit of the public's care lessness. a a Scarcely a day passes without the publication, tin the first page of the tabloid newspapers, of the picture of some infant abandoned 'in an. unlikely spot and rescued from freezing or starvation or both by a resourceful policeman. It always seems to me that the wretches who make a business 'of abandoning day-old infants show little Imagination and no intelli gence at ail. The front pew of a half-deserted but fairly warm Catholic church would obviously be a sensible place for a found ling. People are continually drift lng in and out; a child's cry would surely be Heard by some charitably disposed soul, who would see it was well cared for ', lint" instead of choosing such a suitable place, the baby-losers are always selecting unfeeling asbcans or the steps of some Park avenue , residence. The owners of the' lat ter, affronted by the possible im plication? of the live package, us 'nally wash their hands of the en tire affair and send the child off packing to the nearest police sta tion. I cm riot sponsoring the business of abandoning babies, but I heartily wish it could he con ducted In a more seemly manner in this great and prosperous city a a A queer branch of that virtue Ijm.lan charity holds forth In a -hain of stores mainly. confined to -fpoklyn. They are, I believe, call- vf'tlle Teople's stores. Garments, furniture, household articles, any thing, in fact is solicited by the organization from the entire com munlty The materials are refln ished and sold at cost prices, sup posedly to the poor. Yet anyone be he Henry Ford or Otto Kahn. ' can buy at these places. With no Investigation of customers requlr ed, it Is both possible and prob able that articles Intended for the poverty stricken are being sold to ' those who can well afford to pay the market price. New York- Just now, a yen for '"a fur coat Is easily gratified. Fur - Tiers are literally dragging In cus tomers off the streets, and offer - lng them tremendous bargains. An extraordinarily mild winter has put a terrifying crimp in the bus! ' ness, and a number of firms have already gone bankrupt. And there will be plenty of jothers going on ; the rocks If the Lord does not send "a snowstorm or a, few choice bill iards soon. While the rest of us rejoice, the fur man moans and Ease your tight, aching chest, Stop the pain. Break up the congestion. Feel a bad cold loosen up in just a short time,.' 'i- " ' Bed Pepper Rub" is the cold" rem edy that brings quickest relief. It cannot hurt you and. it certainly teems to end the tightness and drive the congestion and soreness right out, - - Nothing has ' suck con ce tra ted, penetrating neat aa red peppars, and when heat penetrates right down Into colds oongeation,! aching muscles and sore, stiff joints relief eoBMS at ones. - The znotnent you apply Bed repper Ibaft yoa feel the tingling heat. In thres mlsutas the congested spot is warmed through aad through. When yoa are aTifferiflg from a old, rheu matism, bwdcaca, at-T neck er "sore muscles, just get a jar ot Sewles Bed Pepper Bob, made, from red peppers, at any drug store. - Too wfQ ksve the quickest rtUaf known, Ahrays say .Bowles' - - ' BREAK CHEST GOLDS jlH RED PEPPER 130 In an ezdusiTe millinery estab lishments. It Is made of high-grade material. Is artistically put , to gether, and is really a beautiful piece of work. Along eomes a wealthy society woman, who tries it on and declares that it Is dream. She buys it. Then she dis corers that cheap imitations of the same hat are being worn by girls of modest means. Instantly the hat ceases to be a dream and becomes a nlghtmart. Yet In Itself the hat Is just as beautiful as before. Its charm is gone because it has lost Its distinctiveness its unattain ableness. Big stores and little stores are constantly obliged to figure on this human tendency on the part of the rery rich to excite the enry and emulation of those not so rich, and of persons in the humbler social ranks to imitate those of higher status. There is an effort all the while, on the one hand, to procure expensive goods of a kind that cannot be imitated in cheaper quality; and an effort, on the oth er hand, to do that rery thing. sighs. To. reverse the old wheeze, it's a good wind that blows no body ill. a Ninety-five Bedford street con tains a four-story new building that is a dead ringer for any fire house. Bedford street Is in the vil lage, where it Is an advantage to have the ground floor of a dwell ing fronted by two swinging stable doors. A sign on the front Is head ed this . way: "For Celebrates Only I" Further announcement has It that these are "high-class" f.partments, built for those "ar Ists who have arrived" and that are not open to inspection by peo ple who cannot afford "the best." It might, I think, have been wise to consult the dictionary on the spelling of "celebrities" before getting so toney. - Another sign that is somehow funny, perhaps deliberately, is pasted on the rear windows of the new motorcoaches in Westchester which have recently supplanted trolley cars. It reads; "This coach will stop for all other gentlemen half way at any traffic station." Just what it means continues to baffle me. a a a Naive portrait of a lady New Yorker, as described by a cynical young man. She has brown eyes, auburn hair, a straight nose, is very pret ty. and is of average height and weight. She dresses smartly us ually In light blue and wears flesh colored stockings. She has a Pe kinese for a pet, a snappy road ster. and apartment in the west seventies. "She pays her own rent." a a a I clipped this from the Evening World as a specimen of dizzy re porting. "Newton D. Baker, secretary of war under President Wilson, sat reading when we interrupted hlra In his room at the Astor "Mr. Baker was wearing a der by. The window was .open, and there was a breeze coming Into the room. We asked him If he al ways wore a derby. "No." he said. "I wear the first hat I can pick up, but I guess during the war I was the only man in Europe who wore one No, that was not clipped from a humorous column. It was suppos edly a serious Interview. The sign of the zodiac repre sented by tne crab is "Cancer," ac cording to an answered question in Liberty Magazine. j ! Calvin says he has not yet pick ed out his next job. but we bet! it will be a good one. Milwaukee Journal.
