IRATE JUSTICE OF PEACE
FINDS SELF IN JAIL
WALLA WALLA, Feb. 20.
(AP) Citizens of Ferndale, Ore.,
have "put their foot in a trap"
newspapermen here were told
by James O. Howton, Justice
of the peace at Freewater, Ore.,
following his arrest last night in
the "battle of the padlocks," that

He was arrested, charged with
"locking, nailing and barring
doors of school property." He
claims the property is his own, as
he gave the land on which the
community hall stands to Fern
dale, to be used for community
purposes. When Ferndale started
using the building- for a school
imong other things, Howton de
manded $100 for a quit claim
ieed, claiming his deed of gift had
been violated.
The citizens refused and tht
irate justice padlocked the door;
jf the hall time and time agaic
jnly to have citizens beat them of.
with great regularity.
Last night the citizens coming
o the hall for a community meet
'ng, found the doors nailed up
They had Howton arrested and
hen broke In again. In a wordy
kirmish. each side declared its in
dention to "fight for Its rights."
Howton today claimed false ar
rest. Asserting the property was
his. He said the Ferndale peopU
irould have a hard time proving
lim a trespasser. It is a matter.
he said, for the circuit court.

VALUABLE ANIMALS CHASED
FOR MILES WITH DOGS
KEIZER. Feb. 20. (Special)
One of the most Interesting and
exciting events of the past week
was the fox hunt staged in Kelzer
on Wednesday. A fine blue fox
belonging to J. A. Gardner es
caped from the pen and was found
early Wednesday morning In the
hen coop of Lester Evans, enjoying
a morning meal.
Frightened, it ran away and
Lester notified the Gardners.
Jewell Gardner phoned to Arthur
Johnson to come out with his fox
hounds to round it up.
F. N. Woodry accompanied him
with another hound. They chased
over four or five miles of terri
tory, when lone of the hounds saw
the fox and encircling it, held It
at bay until the hunters arrived.
A number of the neighbors
joined in the hunt and considered
it great sport.
Lester Evans carried the fox,
for a mile or more, by the tail and
at arm's length. Mr. Gardner still
has another very valuable fox at
large and it has not been seen for
a week or more.
Rev. F. B. Culver of Salem and
Rev. C. P. Gates of Portland were
dinner guests at the George N.
Thompson home Thursday.
Lester Evans spent last week
end with his sister, Mrs. Delight
Blake, in Portland.
The East Keizer Darning club
meets with Mrs. W. O. Browing
Thursday all day. Quilting will be
the diversion.
