YOUTH RAISES CHAMPION BULL JL S VS TRACTOR MR I 6 MY s Son conditions are the basis of good gardening and fortunately in the light of modern scientific re search they are well under con trol. The city back yard gart enef will confront more prob lems of unfavorable soil than his more fortunate brethren in the country. The first consideration Is whether conditions that may be controlled In the city back yard wIU permit the successful cult' ration of a garden. If the sun does not shine on it for at least fire hours on bright days. It is no use to try a vegetable garden. If it has been filled in with rock, broken brick or cinders It is useless to try a garden. As a general rule if weeds do not grow vigorously, it is not suited for Vegetables. If weeds do grow abundantly you may know the soil Is good for a garden. ' The solution of unfavorable con- i ditions is a vacant lot garden in j a conveniently located neighbor- hood or the remedying of unfavor able conditions by excavating and removing the filling of bricks, stone or cinders and filling in with good soil. If the property Is owned by the occupant, this will always be advisable. If the lot is a small one with big trees close by that will steal the moisture of the soil, look for another garden site and content yourself with a lawn and flowers. Maples and oaks are the worst Find of trees near which to plant vegetable crops because of their of their widespread and voracious root systems. If the eround is low and soggy, ft la not fit for vegtable growing until it can be drained and lightened. The ideal garden spot Is seldom available on the average small city lot but it is often possible to select a site that has a number of the good points necessary for a garden. When there Is any choice, the land should be level or with a gentle slope to the south. Drain age should be good so that water will not stand after rains. The ideal soil i-? a dark "-andy loam with a moisture retentive subsoil. The soil should be deep and break up easily. Flower gardening is developing so rapidly as a national interest that it is giving vegetable garden ing keen competition and many people have given up Email vege table gardens on their city lots in order to devote the space to flow ers, figuring that flowers for cut ting during the summer are a greater economy than vegetables. A happy medium is to combine the flower and vegetable garden and have both. A narrow border, say two or three feet wide, about the vege table path will accommodate suf ficient annuals to furnish cutting material for the greater part of the summer. Borders of calen dulas, marigolds, asters, centau reas. scabiosas. South American daisies, snapdragons or other favo rite cutting material can be ac commodated very readily in this manner. Another plan that is achieving! popularity is to devote the garden to early crops as lettuce, radishes, onions, spinach and peas and to raise annuals and bulbs such as gladiolus and daisies as succession crops, thus combining a dual pur-i Pose. Some of the vegetables may be used as ornamental edgings and for this purpose the parsley and carrot are excellent and the chives with their purple heads in sum mer are frequently used as or namental plants. Rows of carrots THE C1B1T1 GARDEN IS POPULAR P i x ' ? h N , . When Rudolph Isler, 1, of Marion, O., entered high school four year ago he chose pure-bred livestock as his subject in vocational agriculture. By raising prize cattle, the youth not only has made" his four years in school pay him $5,000 in profit, but he has suc ceeded in breeding a champion short horn bull, "Creekdale Mark." His champion took first hoaoa ftt jUw jLataraatioaai livestock Ex hibition at Chicago- may be grown between rows of annuals verv easily as their foliage is not sufficiently heavy to offer much interference. The combination of annuals and vegetables offers the opportunity for many ingenious arrangements. Dahlias and gladiolus, which may be planted as late as June, offer the easiest solution of a succes sion of flowers to follow the vegetables. If the garden plot is a small one devoted only to early spring vegetables it is a simple matter to clear them off and plant a garden of annuals to replace the vegetables by the end of May. the annuals being grown in seed boxes and ready to transplant into place when the vegetables have been used. These flower and vegetable combinations are favorites with English gardeners. E A plan for accrediting herds of infectious abortion was made by the Oregon Dairyman's asso ciation in annual meeting at Fair view. This p:an will soon be put Into effect by the state livestock board. The Oregon Agricultural college experiment station with leading dairymen of the state con ducted the experiments that re sulted in this plan. The work. carried on since 1919, was made possible by special appropriations from the legislature. Resolutions were passed recom mending adequate inspection of all milk used for market purposes; urging creameries to adopt a sys tem of grading cream, paying higher prices for better quality: and condemning the practice of creameries engaged in the busi ness of selling butter substitutes, of creating an antificially high price of butter at certain seasons. thus stimulating use of oleomar garine. Scientific investigations show that road Improvements have re sulted in tremendous reductions in the costs of oDeratine motor tracks and automobiles. The fed eral bureau of public roads is con fident that the saving in fuel and oil and in wear and tear on ve hicles is much more than the an nual expenditures for improved roads. A KEEPER OF DEES MADRID. Spain. Feb. 18 (AP) King Alfonso is deeply In terested in the science of beekeep ing. He has ordered 1.000 hives to be placed in the royal park of the palace and has promised to give further orders for his coun try estates. During a visit of the kins to the bee society's headquarters he tasted the wines and spirits made from fermented honey and said they were excellent. Many per sons prefer them to the wines and spirits made from grapes. The leading agriculturist of Spain is Antonio Garary Vitorica, who, on his estate at Claveria, Caceres, has 1.500 hives. Th rnna alnn waa ft i aVlfl t m nn an appropriation of some 19000, 000 for improving the breeding of farm horses in East Prussia. Dr. Hoesch. .who is an authority on farming, said that if no im provement set in, Germany in two or three years would be short of horses .and would have to depend on other countries for them. Tractors as substitutes for horses in farm work, he added, had been a great disappointment so much so that 40 percent of j the tractors in Prussia were now I out of commission. Deputy Theodore Roeingh of Westphilia agreed and said that even in the United States, the land of the greatest technical de velopment, there were still 26 , 000.000 horses. Dr. Steiger. Prussian minister for agriculture promised increased zeal in porvldlng sound breeding material and monetary induce ments to private hose ownes to cooperate In raising more horses. LONDON, Feb. 18 (AP) Farmers and dairy-men are per turbed at the appearance on the market of "synthetic cream," which U said to be meeting with a good demand.
