Continuing with rebuttal testi mony for the government, the trial went into its fourth week today The issuance of log acceptance paper without any actual trans action behind it, began in the summer of 1925 and continued during 1926 and the early part of 1927. This was the testimony of Wayne W. Waite, for five years bookkeeper for the McCormick Lumber company at the plant at McCormick, Wash. In 1927 when, defense testi mony has shown, credit in excec; of one million dollars had been se cured at eastern banks on trad acceptances of the McCormick company and the Wheeler-Olm , stead company, the witness said ut 130,000 worth of logs bat been actually purchased by the companies. Today, the second day of the svent, will see the introduction of two divisions of the week's pro gram that will prove of especial Interest to housewives. They are the .Oregon Statesman' Cooking school and the "Better Homes Week" program under the direc tion ot the Salem Woman's club, with Mrs. George K. Vehrs general chairman. The Woman's club is sponsoring lectures and demonstrations on every phase of better homes mak ing from 2 to 3 o'clock each day. The Statesman's cooking school, whjch is being sponsored by the newspaper, the Willamette Gro cery, Vollmer Clearwater com pany, and the H. L. Stiff Furniture company, will be held until Fri day, will be from 2 to 4:30 o'clock. Miss Ethel Murdock and Mrs. J. M. Cummings, both of Portland and cooking experts, will have charge of the school. Just preceding the opening of the program, a demonstration in home beautification was made by the six girls of the Home Beauti fication club of Leslie junior high school, when an empty booth was filled with plants. The booth was sponsored by the Ladd tnd Bush bank, and the floral display was from Bateham's Floral gardens, H. C. Bateham being the leader of the club. - Other firms and the displays were: Crest and company, all kinds of built-ins and time savers for the kitchen: Capital City Bed ding company, new and rebuilt mattresses; Hutcheon Paint store, paints and varnishes for the home and their use; Salvation Army; Frigidaire; White Sewing Machine company, machines and supplies; Salem Travel agency, showing pic tures, of the lines It represents; Meadow Lawn Dairy; Portland Electric Power company, electrical appliances for the , housewife; Eastman furnaces from Eastman Brothers, Sllverton; Eoff Electric store, electrical stoves and other appliances; Pearcy Brothers nur sery, plants and shrubs; Berger furnaces: Hansen and Liljequlst sash and door display; Angora Rug korks, entire booth decorated with white and colored rugs; an attractive display of the photogra phic art from the studios of Gun nell and Ellis; booth sponsored by the Salem Business and Profes sional women; Salem Realty board, and Princess flour by Wil lamette Grocery.
