Interesting Program Present
ed at Meeting of Salem
Woman's Club ,
A program not only of unusual
Interest but also of great educa
tional ralue was presented at the
meeting of the Salem Woman's
club Saturday afternoon at the
club-house on North Cottage street
under the auspices of the Institu
tions' department of which Mrs.
S. M. Endlcott Is general chair
man.
Mr. J. Lyman Steed, superlnten
dent of the State School for the
Deaf, was the principal speaker of
the afternoon. His subject was
"Education of the Deaf" which he
discussed in a most interesting
manner.
Erery state in the union, accord
ing to the speaker, with the ex
ception of three or four, has state
schools for the deaf? Various meth
ods hare been tried' in the schools.
The oral method Is now employ
ed in the majority of such insti
tutions and in this way the pupn
is taucht Hd reading and to speak.
Th are 129 Dunils in the
rhonl at the present time. The
state furnishes books, board, and
lodging, the cost for each pupil be
ing approximately $393 a year.
This is a sum of money well spent
for it makes an independent citi
zen from one laboring under a
great handicap.
An interesting demonstration
was given by a group of boys from
the first and second grades under
the direction of Mr. Steed. Miss
Margaret Schumaker presented
three senior boys with a history
questionnaire which they answered
orally. The boys gave the salute to
the flag in unsion. .
A Dutch dance was fciven by
four intermediate pupils dressed
in quaint Dutch costumes. Mrs. J.
Lyman Steed played the accompan
iment Twelve boys, ranging in size
from seniors to beginners, wearing
attractive Colonial costumes gave
an intricate drill, keeping perfect
time to Miss Stutter's playing.
i A piano solo by one of the boys
concluded the program given by
the faculty and students at the
State School for the Deaf.
Frank Durbin. Jr. appeared be
, fore the club and spoke briefly on
the "History of Present Day Dairy
Herds" and "The importance of
Milk in the Diet."
Interest of club women as well
as others in Salem is centering
around the bridge and Oriental tea
which the club is sponsoring Fri
day afternoon.
