Dangerous Traffic Hazard

to the Oregon State Motor associa
tion. All too frequently accidents
and injuries due to this condition
are recorded. The situation is
being corrected as rapidly as no-

When the proper pressure is
distantly maintained the air in
the tire actually supports the load
while the tire acts as a container
for the air and performs its func
tion without abnormal strain.
Lack of pressure throws the
weight on the side walls causing
the tire to bend and strain re-
ulting in breaks, cracks and cord
epa rat ion.
An under-inflated tire is sub
jected to so much extra flexing as
t passes over the road surface
that it actually heats the tire mori
than if it wero at normal pres
sure. The heit and added strain
shorten the life of the rubber,
fabric and cords in the tire.
Under-inflated tires are subject
to cord breaks more readily than
tires carrying correct air pressure.
A sharp blow may easily cush the
sidewall3 or tread against the rim
causing a break or bruise. Road
conditious that are encountered
in everyday driving-traffic but
tons. curb3, car tracks and broken
pavement all add to the necessity
of keeping the tires properly in
flated. An inner tube has been recent
ly introduced through the West
ern Auto Supply company stores
which Is said to eliminate under
inflation to a marked degree. Ac
cording to local manager Willis
Clarke this new tube is composed
of pure gum rubber and being
free from compounds is practi
cally non-porus and will relain
original air pressure for a long

"The Poison tube shows re
markable ability In cushioning the
sharp blows that would ordinarily
break the corda or fabric and ab
sorgs the shock without any dam
age to the tire. The heavy inner
crescent of highly compressed
rara rubber distributes the force
of the blow over a wide area
thereby preventing cord breaks
and ruptures.
"In a recent service test," says
Mr. Clarke, "in which two tires
were used, one equipped with a
Tolson tube and the other with an
ordinary, good quality tube, it
was found that the casing equip

pendability in motor cars, the mo
torist is taking longer and more
trips in his car. Looking far into
the future, we can see ribbons of
concrete stretching from coast to
coast and Interlinking roads that
would make motoring easy to all
parts of the United State3. Four
or five hundred miles per day will
be common shortly on these super
highways.
"Franklin engineers have built
toward the present motoring con
dition for years. The Franklin
airman of today has high speed
and fast acceleration. It Is true
but alwavs uppermost in our
minds has been the thought of
making this speed usable over all
conditions of road3 with safety
and absolute comfort.
"We have long advocated fast
travel most miles In a day's run
and have succeeded in making the
Franklin a fast car that can main
tain top speeds all day without fa
tigue to the car, driver or pas
sengers. These features are more
and more appreciated as motor
lsts use their cars for longer trips
and demand that these trips shall
leave them fresh enough for busi
ness or pleaure at the end of the-
day's run."
