FEBRUARY P. 1928 XnYt I A r Professor Laughlin Speaker at Meeting of Presbyterian Society The Missionary society of the First Presbyterian church enjoyed a very Interesting meeting yester day afternoon In the church par lors. Miss Lillian Applegatc intro duced the speaker of the after noon, Professor 8. B. Laughlin, a member of the Willamette Univer sity faculty. Professor Laughlin's subject was "The Origin of the African Negro" which he develop ed in a most Interesting manner. A significant statement which he made In the course of his talk was, "All people are of one blood: physical environment has brought about the racial differences of to day." Mrs. Henry Mille told of the "Art, Literature, and Music of the Negro." Xegro spirituals were played on the victrola. Miss M. Danley, executive sec retary of the colored branch of the Portland Y. W. C. A. gave a highly entertaining sketch of her work. Her listeners were fully con vinced of the truth of her conclud ing statement, "We may have Christianity or race prejudice, but we cannot have both." Tea was served at the close of the afternoon by the hostesses, .Mrs. Emmons, Mrs. Allison, Mrs. Lamb, Mrs. Skafe, Mrs. Pooler, Mrs. Allen, and Mrs. Wyatt.. Interesting Program Given at State Tuberculosis Hospital An interesting program of mu f K-al numbers and dramatic read ings was given Tuesday evening at the State Tuberculosis Hospital by the students of Miss Carol Dib ble and Miss Left a Belle Tartar, under the sponsoring of the In stitutions department of the Sa lem Woman's club. Miss Edith Clement gave "At the Ferry" and Mrs. 8. H. Van Trump, "Joint Owners in Spain." Miss Doris Haley's contribution to the program was entitled "What William Henry Did," nd Miss Lor William Henry Did," and Miss Lor ene Rideout, who will be present ed in recital next Monday evening in the auditorium of the Nelson building, gave, "Columbus" and "Joy of tb Hills." Miss Billle Cupper sang "Morn ing" (Speaks) and "April Fool" l Garland). Miss Lois Plummer played her accompaniment. Those motoring out to the hos pital were Mrs. S. M. Endicott, general chairman of the Institu tions' department, Mrs. E. M. Hoff nell, Mrs. L. O. Clement, Mrs. Ray Farmer, Miss Carol Dibble, and Percy Cupper This -program given by these talented young people was one of the most interesting presented by the department this year. Recent Guests in Salem Mr. and Mrs. Zadoc Riggs and Mrs. Riggs' mother, Mrs. Jean ettu Waller, all of Portland were guests of Salem friends one day of the week. The rooms of the Paulsen home were lovely with red cyclamen. pussywillows, and Valentine nov elties. Four tables of bridge were in play throughout the afternoon High score prize was won by Mrs. Elmer Daue. Mrs. Huston received a guest prize. The guest group included Mrs. Thomas F. Huston, Mrs. A. H. Moore, Mrs. M. C. Petteys, Mrs. Lou Grote, Mrs. V. E. Kuhn, Mrs. L. W. Gleason, Mrs. Elmer Daue, Mrs. Carl Armstrong, Mrs. O. A. Olsen. Writers' Club Meets at Public Library The Writer's Section of the Sa lem Arts League met Tuesday evening in the fire-place room of the Salem public library. The program opened with the reading of three short poems by Mrs. W. F. Fargo. She also read several verses from the north western anthology of Oregon poets Mrs. Blanche M. Jones read "Neglected Flowers" and "Retrou- see," two original lyrics. "Retrospect" was the name of the poem which was contributed to the evening's program by Mrs. Ora F. Mclntyre. Charles J. Lisle read an editor ial, "Dave Mofflt's Dream," which he has sold to Collier's magazine. He -also read seeral other editor ials. Robert C. Paulus read a poem from the Literary Digest which was written by an Oregon man. The group will meet again in a fortnight. American Legion Auxiliary Members Motor to Mc Minnville A group of members of the American Legion auxiliary motor ed to McMlnnville Tuesday eve ning to attend the dinner given by the auxiliary of that city in con nection with the Legion district convention which was held there. The trip was made in the bene fit of the Valentine dance which the local auxiliary is sponsoring Tuesday evening February 14, in the Crystal Gardens ballroom. Campaign For Funds Meeting With Success Salem people will be interested to know that the $7,000 -Y. W. C. A. campaign for funds which it being put on this week is meet ing with great success. The workers reported at the luncheon yesterday that approxi mately $4400 had been raised dur ing the first two days of the cam paign. The ladies of the First Baptist church served the luncheon yes terday. Miss Laura Heist was the speaker of the afternoon. She told of the Y. W C. A. work In Eng land and other countries which she visited while on her recent trip abroad. The ladies of the First Presby terian church will serve the lunch eon which will be held at noon to day at the Y. M. C. A. R. N. A. Card Party Given at Fraternal T emple The Royal Neighbors of America sponsored a card party Monday afternoon February 6. Mrs. Sarah Peterson won first prize and Mrs. Myers received the second award.
