association is a great asset to Sa
lem. It is worthy of the support
of all. In addition to its splendid
work along mental, moral, physi
cal, and recreational lines, the Y.
W. C. A. affords its members the
opportunity of working In an or
ganization which Is represented In
practically all parts of the world.
We have no exact means of mea
suring the influence which this
group of young people exercises
over tnose outside the organiza
tion as well aslts members.

One of the most attractive af
fairs of the week was the after
noon tea (lren Tuesday afternoon
at the home of Judge and Mrs,
Henry J. Bean of ourt street by
the northwest division ot the First
Presbyterian church aid society.
Mrs. Bean and the officers of
the society . formed the receiving
line.
The feature of the afternoon
was the interesting talk given by
Mrs. Albert Schmidt of Albany
who spoke of the South Sea Isl
ands which she visited in the
spring and summer of the past
year. j
She described the Fiji and Sa-;
moan Islands and their Inhabi
tants. A number of beads, corals,
and other curios which she gather
ed there were exhibited.
Miss Marjorie Miller sang sev
eral songs following this delight
ful travel talk. She was accom
panied by Miss Helene Price. Both
girls are students at Willamette
University.
The tea table In the dining room
of the Bean home was very lovely
with a lace cloth and a center
piece of primroses and pink ta
pers. Mrs. Norman Kendall Tully and
Mrs. S. P. Kimball presided at the
urns.

General Federation of Women's
clubs according to Princees Wat-
awasco, a member of the Penobs
cot tribe of Maine, who, while a
visitor at the headquarters of the
Woman's club of Dea Molnea
Iowa, recently recalled the con
vention of the Oeneral Federa
tion held in that city, and said:
"I shall never forget the meet
ing. A man had been sent out
from New York to address the
Federation on Americanization
and I had been sent out to sing.
But when that man had finished
I was so angry I could not sing,
so I exercised a woman's privi
lege I talked. And I pointed my
finger In that man's face and told
him what I thought about Ameri
canization. I was a little different
from what he thought.
"But the woman seemed to
agree witn me. tor me uenerai
Federation at once took up our
cause, and 18 months after that
week, the firat American citizens,
were Americanized thanks to
American women.
"Now' it is my hope that educa
tion and citizenship will hasten the
day when reservations and guard
ianship will no longer be necessary
for the-welfare'of the American
Indian."
