Reviews Progress
Results of the Marlon county
child health demonstration work
during the first half of the five
year period have been satisfactory
and encouraging, says Barry
Smith, director of the Common
wealth Fund who is in the city in
specting the work.
He anticipates still greater
progress in the establishment of a
well rounded public health pro
gram during tne remaining time
of the demonstration until its
close, July 1, 1930.
While the departure of Dr.
Walter H. Brown was a loss. Dr.
De Kleine. who has succeeded
him, has had wide and long ex
perience in public health and will
prove an able and worthy succes
sor." said Mr. Smith.
While Mr. Smith has not had
opportunity to meet many of the
Marion county people who are in
terested in the demonstration.
both he and Miss Quin, assistant
director of the fund, who has been
here ten days, are much impressed
by the support given the work and
Mr. Smith expressed especial
pleasure at the cordial cooperation
of the medical profession. All the
fund's demonstrations have en
Joyed this but Mr. Smith believes
it is especially marked in Marion
county.
The Commonwealth fund was
organized in 1918 with an endow
ment of approximately $38,000.-
000 given by the late Mrs. Stephen I
Harkness who died two years ago
The fund employes directly or in
directly about 300 persons, chiefly
in public health, mental hygiene.
and education.

children. The fund has had 10
demonstrations of this work, at
Los Angeles, St. Louis, St. Paul,
Minneapolis, Dallas, Cleveland,
Philadelphia, Richmond, and Nor
folk. All were successful except
at Norfolk. The fund is now oper
ating a mental hygiene training
clinic in New York called the "In
stitute of Child Guidance." with a
budget of 1176,000.
(3) The fund has promoted es
tablishment of visiting teaching
in the public schools in some fifty
communities in the United States
(4) The Fund is spending
$150,000 per year in public health
in Austria, mostly for children
The ' office of this work is in
Vienna.
(6) The Fund is building six
hospitals In various rural com
munities of the United States
Hospitals have been completed at
Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Fanville,
Va. Others will be at Farming-
ton, Maine; Beloit, Kansas; Glas
gow,. Kentucky; and Wansen.
Ohio.
(6) Two year fellowships to
graduates of English universities.

for study in American universi
