Episode Adds Controversial Fuel
To Flames of Strife Over
Union of Two Churches
LONDON, Jan. 10. (A P)
Another move In the religious
strife featuring the life of Eng
land at present was made today
with publication Of the newly re
vised prayer book of the Church
of England which will be submit
ted to tne church assembly on
February 6. If ratified by the
church assembly, the book will
again go to tbe house o f com
mons where on December 15 after
one of the most dramatic debates
in modern times parliament re
jected the version upon which the
church authorities had labored
twenty years.
Coming closely on the heels of
publication of the Mallnes conver
sations which had sought church
unity and the pope's encyclical
stating definitely that a return to
Rome was essential for church
unity, the renewed attempt to obi
tain approval of the revised pray
er book by the house of commons
is expected to add fuel to the
flame of religious controversy.
This controversy has its genesis in
charges by one section of the
church of England that the revis
ed prayer book is a movement in
the direction of Roman Catholic
onus and practice.
Certain changes have been made
in the newly revised version of the
prayer book with reference to
forms of worship which came un
der criticism, but it is understood
that these are considered minor
and ineffective ones by the
treme protestant-anglicans.
