PAVED and MACADAM ROADS
No city in the northwest is blessed with such a network of paved and
macadam roads as Salem. And paved roads mean better business and social
conditions for any community. Within a radius of 25 miles, there are 235
miles of paved roads and 950 miles of macadam roads in the Salem district,
all leading direct to Salem. A community with paved roads and no dirt
roads is sure to attract settlers from eastern states. No community in the
Mississippi valley, or even the eastern states, is blessed with such good
roads as the Salem district. In this paved roads district, there will come
first the reaction for higher prices for farm lands. Already in the rural
disticts fewer and fewer farms are being offered for sale. Farmers are
now facing this question : If I sell out, where can I move to where I will
have better opportunities for farming and where can I find a community
better than Marion and Polk counties with their good roads and all Ameri
can citizens ? The answer is : "You can't find any such community' Any
farmer who will visit other communities before offering his place for sale,
will soon learn that Marion and Polk county real estate, considering price,
cannot be excelled by any district m the west. There is something in the
air and it is this : Farm land in the Salem district will never be lower in
price than at the present time."
HEALTHFUL CHILDREN

In Marion county, more! money is being spent caring for the health of
its school children and even those before school age, than in any county
west of the Rocky mountains.
It is the only county in j the entire west where every baby, every child
and every one attending school may be given a special health examination
from time to time without charge.
In Marion county, the Commonwealth Fund of New York is spending
each year more than $60,000 caring for the health of its young folks.
There are 12 health centers in Marion county and at each there is
placed an expert in health matters pertaining to children.
The Marion county Child Health Demonstration, with head offices in
Salem, is in charge of Dr. Walter H. Brown, one of the greatest child health
experts in the United States. And with Dr. Brown is a staff of 24 child
health experts who give their entire time to the health of the children in
Marion county. These things are worth while. And therefore, living in
Marion county with such advantages for children, is worth while. Every
school district in the county is visited from time to time by child health
experts from the Marion County Child Health Demonstration. Living in
such a county is worth while just as surely as health is worth while. And
good health is just one of I the many advantages offered children in the
Salem district. : . - '
