telegraph and the telegraph code,
followed up Steinhefl's experi
ments and In 1844 transmitted
messages across a canal 75 feet
wide. This was accomplished by
I two metal conductors in each side
i of the canal. By the Insertion of
a battery between the two under-
I water plates a current was car
? ried across the canal with the wa
il tcr as the conductor. Three miles
' was the greatest distance reached.
I Professor Dolbear trf Tufts ol-
lege, Boston, in 1882 invented an
f ' Induction transmission device. By
this method an electrical influ
v ence exerted by a charged body
r or1 by a magnetic field Is sent to
neighboring bodies without wires.
Prof. Dolbear was able to trans
mit both telegraph and voice.
The radiation method Is trsed
today in both broadcasting and
commercial radio. It comprises a
means of disturbing the ether so
-that a series of electrical waves
t are produced. Marconi was a pio-
j,: neer in thfs field.

which the. County Health Unit was
established (1926), the Oregon
Board pf Dental Examiners enter
ed Into a cooperative agreement
with the Commonwealth Fund to
establish a Dental Unit which
would Work out the best methods
for develooine a program in public
health dentistry in a community-
After a year of experimentation In
Marlon county, the Unit has
reached a stare where extension
service into other communities is
now feasible. In November. 1927.
the first real piece of extension
service was begun 1n Jackson
county by Dr. Estill L. Brunk,
full time dentist for the Unit.
Both the medical and dental
program have received the closest
kind of cooneration from tnemeo
leal and dental groups of Marion
county. - A dental advisory, com
mlttee: aoDOinted from the Marl
on.Prtiif-Yamhill District Dental
Society, and a medical advisory
committee, appointed from the
Marion-Polk-Yamhlll Medical 8o
iatv. naas on every dental and
medical procedure before It go
Into effect
This cooneration extends even
farther. A report of the health
clinic is sent to the family phys
ician, whom the nurse goes to for
instruction before followinc up
the child's examination with a
heme visit. The family dentist re
ceives a written report of Dr
Bnjnk's findings. The parents of
the child also receive a written
report f every examination.
In addition to the establishment
of the County HeaHh Unit and the
Dental Unit, the past three years
have proved a steady growth for
all Jhe services ot the Demonstra
tion. While the resignation of
Dr. Brown as director in Novem
ber. 1927 was a matter of real re
gret, it did not Interfere with the
routine and development of the
program. The Demonstration was
fortunate to secure the services
of Dr. William DeKlelne as Dr.
Brown's successor. Dr. DeKlelne
came to Marion county with a
wide background of experience in
the public health field, and with
several years experience as direct
or of similar demonstrations.
The Demonstration is how en
tering its fourth year. The end
of the following year (1929) will
witness the. withdrawal of the
Commonwealth Fund from Mart-,
on countr. It is hoped that the
value of a general health program
will have been thoroughly demon
strated by the end of the fifth
year, and that a health unit, man
ned with an adequate staff to
safely guard and promote Marion
county's health will have become
a permanent and. Indispensable
part of the county's organization.
