18 THE OREGON STATESMAN, SALEM, OREGON. SUNDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 18, 1927 COPPEBS LEADING mi 1 11.1 Buying Orders Distributed Over Wide Area; Heavy Accumulation Seen ! - NEW YORK, Dec. 17. (AP) Constructive forces were acatn at work in the New York stock mark et today . and another impressive demonstration of strength la the face of rather heavy week-end re alizing. Buying orders were dis tributed over a broad list, but the copper, public utility, tobacco and merchandizing issues made the best group showings. Trad ing was in unusually heavy vol ume for a half-holiday session. Steady improvement in the cop per industry was reflected in the heavy' accumulation of those shares. Anaconda, Calumet & Arizona, Chile, Green Cananea and Nevada all - reached H new hfeb ground.' General Motors and U. 8. Steel common, leaders in the upswing yesterday, ran into a lot of profit taking and could make little headway. , Public : utilities moved forward under the leadership of the West en! company stocks, particularly Pacific Coast-, and Southern Cali fornia Edison. Consolidated Cigar led the advance in the tobacccos, which were also featured by a brisk recovery in Porto Rican B, which slumped badly earlier in the week." The closing was strong. Total sales approximated 1,400,000 shares. . ' . The opening ; was strong, under (he leadership of high grade in dustrials. General Electric open ed a point - higher . and American Can and Anaconda -Copper ad vanced to new high levels for the year. r Encouraged hj the ease of cred it conditions, and the -optimistic nature of the current business re ports, pools started to hid up stocks In all sections of the list. Professional traders, who had sold many issues,' oh the theory that the market was entitled to at least a. technical reaction, were forced to cover- pare of their commit ments because . of . the violence of some of the advances. Greene Cananea, copper was quickly run - up 6 points to a new. high, record at 132 hi, or more than 100 points above the. year's low. -Pacific Gas &. Electric and Indian Motorcycle also reached new high' ground. Heavy accumulation .of the low priced oils, particularly Sinclair and Simms, was based on expecta tions of an early advance In crude oil prices in the southwest. Foreign exchanges opened steady, with demand strling quot ed around $4.87. ued to stand out, Anaconda 7s gaining more than- 3 points to - a new . high, while ; Andes Copper Mining 7g had an extreme rise of more than a point, duplicating their previous peak. A 2 point gain was registered by Continental Bag & Paper 6 a, which skirted their previous max mum for ; the year, but most of tne remaining recent favorites inn dined to heaviness. Recessions were noted in Loev 6s with war rants, possibly reflecting the an nouncement of new financing, and in Canadian Pacific 4s and Denver & Rio Grande 4a. In the foreign group, sagging lendences developed in some of the Japanese issues, following re xrts that one of the largest Jap anese banks will close next sorine as a result of the recent financial Jifficulties. French Issues were steady, but irregularity ruled oth-j ;r European bonds.; The federal government depart ment reflected only a small vol i me of bnginess. . CiBlIETWl 1IK SOM LD E FALL!
