Dr. DeKleine Interesting Speaker at Meeting of Salem Woman's Club Members of the Salem Woman's Club and - their guests present at the meeting Saturday heard one of the most interesting talks ever given before the club. when Dr. William DeKleine new director of the Marion County Health Demon stration, spoke on the subject, "Flood Relief Work in the Missi ssippi Valley." Dr. DeKleine, who was director j of relief work done by the Red Cross in the valley following the disastrous flood in the sprin of this year, gave a wonderfully clear Me of the ability ot the Red Cross. - In the ' Mississippi flood there were ninety-two counties In i slx different states under water I tor from three to eight weeks. One million persons were driven from their homes. Some ot these were taken care of by relatives and friends but the majority relied on the relief work done by the Red Cross. - More than six-hundred thousand were clothed, housed, and fed during this period of sev eral months. Fifty-thousand are still being cared for. j Another interesting fact which Dr. DeKleine brought out in: his illuminating talk was that, con trary to expectations, there was less sickness following the flood than there had been at any time In a period of five years among the Inhabitants ot the Inundated area. One-thousand people were immunised for typhoid and one- fourth of that number for small pox. Two tons of Quinine were distributed to tne people as apre- ventitive ot malaria. Slx-mllllon dollars - was con tributed by the American, people and the entire amount was used in actual relief work. The salaries of the officials and overhead expen ses are paid from tne itea uross treasury which Is made up from the yearly roll calL The meeting Saturday was not a social meeting but aside from the talk given by Dr. DeKleine was devoted entirely to business. Mrs. Walter L. Spaulding gave a report ot the bazaar sponsored two weeks ago by the hospital di vision of the club. Two-hundred and two dollars was realized. One half the amount will be deposited in the club building fund and the remainder will be given to the Sa lem General hospital. Mrs. CJ S. Hamilton, chairman ot the calendar committee, an nounced that the club calendars will be ready for distribution next week. Booths tor their- sale will be maintained at Hamilton's Fur niture Store, 240 Court Street, on Monday and Tuesday, December 19th and 20th. .is- tne ncn xoubs m 'uu fnv fnr kr hmbind!'"'
