C00LIDGELAYS HEAVY BLAME UPON CHAMBER (Continued from Page One) day's newspapers of a chamber of commerce statement which de clares that tax reductions "could easily' reach $400,000,000 because large treasury surpluses show plainly that the government is tak ing more tax money from the pub lic than ia jtteessary to run the governmenroJnd retire the nation-4 al debt as already provided for by law." - r The chamber insisted that an other, large surplus was in view for next year, sufficient to encom pass the reduction It proposed and that even if the surplus should run short of expectations "it is ob vious in view of the credit stand ing ot the government and low in terest rates it can . obtain there would be no great cause for alarm even though a deficit, through un expected developments, should arise." Calls Them Ignorant It was this view ot the chamber of commerce that particularly in curred the ire of Mr. Coolidge. It was made known in sharply word ed phraeea that this attitude,, in his- opinion, shows a total lack of knowledge of the federal budget plan. - The criticism -levelled at the business organization today was the second attempt made at the White House to show the presi dent considers t he chamber of commerce's proposal excessive. A few weeks ago, when its $400,- 000,000 .tax reduction plan was first made public, it was stated po litely but emphatically that the president considered it out of the question. Despite this view of the presi dent and the recommendation of the house ways and means com mlttee, which Is drafting a reve nue bill, that the total tax reduc tion be held to $236,000,000, or about $11,000,000 above the $225,000,000 figure recommended by the treasury, the chamber of commerce yesterday announced that it was standing pat on its $400,000,000 demand. lieved the storm which had envel oped the Pacific, northwest tor two days, was over. The severe rains sent the Willamette river up from a 10 toot stage Thursday to 16.6 tonight. A. 16.5 foot -stage was forecast for tomorrow, with 4 tall to follow,' unless another " heavy storm loomed up. At Chehalls, Wash., one million feet of loga broke away when a boom split up at the Luedinhaus Lumber company mills. Later the logs piled up in a jam just above the Ceres bridge. The Chehalls and Jiewaukum valleys . were flooded for miles tonight. At Toledo, Ore., a flood similar to that of 1921 was forecast unless the storm there abated at once The lowlands were submerged and the Roosevelt highway was block ed by a huge slide at Whale Cove A large hole was washed in the Corvallls-Newport highway one mile east of Toledo. . The South ern Pacific - railway was blocked by a derailed engine one mile west ot the city. Tillamook was marooned by the storm for 16 hours from late last night to this afternoon. All high ways and railways were blocked all telegraph wires were down and the only means -of communication with the interior was over a sin gle telephone line to McMinnville Late this afternoon the highway slides had been removed suffi clently to permit, one stage line to resume operation. The ' railroad tleup remained complete. RIVER ADVANCES FAST TO FLOOD STAGE HERE (Continued from Page One) Edward Johnsoi Who sang at the ElsinOre last night, uses and endorses the Bald win piano. Nov. 24. (Thursday. Delayed) (AP) Mi guel Augustin Projuarez, Catholic priest, who tell before the bullets of an execution squad pn Wednes day, was buried with his three ex ecuted companions today as a martyr. - The men, who were executed on charges of being responsible for the attempt to assassinate former Preaident Obregon November 13, were carried through great crowds that lined the route of the cortege, weeping and at times - crying, "Viva the martyrs." Then they were lowered into separate graves without ceremony or rites, except for the praying and chanting of thousands that lasted until night came and the cemetery gates were closed. Probably the greatest crowde that ever gathered for the funerals ot ; private persons in Mexico saw the bodies of the four men carried to I their last resting places. At least 20,000 persons must hare gathered along the line of march and at the cemetery. REALTY VALUES LINKED WITH LINEN INDUSTRY (Continued from Page One) ialize. i The realtors and the owners t the new buildings In Salem, could much better afford to raise the amount needed to put the linen mill out ot debt themselves, than to see the value of all this prop erty cut down as It will be if the linen mill goes into the hands of a receiver. And that is just what, will hap pen, according to the prediction ot Thomas B. Kay; president of Oregon Linen Mills, Inc.,-if the remainder of the $75,000 bonds to put the, corporation out of debt is not sold. . The present owners of stock in the company are looked to tor the balance of this amount, which is now approximately $15,000. The bonds, none of which are to be sold until the entire $75,000 is subscribed, will , constitute a first lien on the linen mill plant, so that stockholders purchasing the bonds will be in effect buying a first mortgage on their own stock. nm FIGHT LOOMS DATE OF APPLICATION OF TAX REDUCTION ISSUE BUCHAREST, Rumania.
