He did not find many tng to go on record in cold print concerning the things our thousands of strawberry growers want to know: that the people de- pendlng on their prosperity want tknow .';:.- ' " But be ' found an undercurrent of eptlmtam among the big men la the industry, i ' There was an Immense increase In strawberry acreage last year In this district, and there was a vast Increase in our strawberry ton nage for this year, orer 192 . Al most beyond belief. Three times the tonnage of last year was ready for the markets this year. Per uana, more than that, for. there were some berries left on' the Tines In the Lacomb section, and In one or two other sections, where the growers had not contracted their crops, or had made contracts with some welching dealers. ' A Mountain of TTaem -That meant a lot of strawber ries in tbe Salem- district .: for 1927. It meant around 12,000, 000 pounds. A mountain of straw berries. But the reliable packers In Salem took all the berries they had contracted for, and . the 1 2,' 000.000 pounds, or thereabouts, were prepared for and sent to the markets mostly, in cans and bat' Why Risk f the Dangers that result from A Bad G61d It Is easier asd safer to stop that cough now with : - ' 8CIIAEFE3VS THROAT AND LUXO BALSALM bchaerer s : DRUG 8TORS .'." 188 N. And nearly all the canned ber ries: hare been x sold and the boards will be swept clean around the first of the rear. And the bulk of the barreled berriee hare been sold, and they will be disposed of before the next harvest comes on. This: will mean a consumer de mand for the. next crop In cans and f. barrels that will be a fair one, to say the least. And that Is remarkable, considering the Tast Increase of the supply in one. year. , A Strawberry Cult' wa bare deTelODed here a strawberry ; cult. -t)ur best grow ers know how. They know the right rarities. They know; how to control the : pests. They rotate. They are adopting a three crop ro tation. Instead of producing four crops on the same Tines. This makes for Quality- and quantity. It makes for larger returns from the land. And better pest coatrol.1 . We produce the best . canning berries, and the best for barrel ing. And we are improving the quality. We have the pickers who know the game, i - .This Is a fine thing for the fu ture of the Industry Tiere. The new growers have the advantage of the experience of the old ones. No one need go astray." ' ;' :: " As To Prices' ' There was no contracting, till yery lately, for the .1928 crop. It has developed in the past few days that many contracts have been of fered. at T cents a pound, for the 121'a, the canning berries, and a number ... have been made. Con tracts have been offered toy bar reling berries. Marshal's and the like, at the current market price. That price has not yet been estab lished. It will .likely be, soon. Berries will : be pnt into ; barrels, next year. Perhaps as many as this rear and that means a t lot Of Some barreling berries brought 9 - cents a pound this year and some contracts at that price were not tUled. ' The :bayers welched. But not. one of I the established cannery concerns in Salem i did this. Neither this year,, nor any other year. ; -' ." The prices for next year, on the average, may not -rule as high this year. ; But they are not likely to be many shades less, counting the whole list' i t , So our growers be "strong and of good couTage. according to the inspired urge of old, for out strawberry industry here Is not only great but will grow greater. STRAWBERRY INDUSTRY OF THE SALEM DISTRSCT (Continued from Page Eight) and barreling berries. - On the whole, Mr. Allen "la con fident of the' enduring qualities of the strawberry industry, for this district, and he expects to see a normal growth though it ' must STRAWBERRIES TO BE I ALL SOLD, FORECAST (Continued from Page One) I rellag - and other frozen package demand. . Especially the canning demand. Our growers have developed the Etterburg cannlnw berrr to a One point, and it does better la thV. district than elsewhere. Ik has the nrst can la the canning trade. There is a shortage in pie goods, and all our berries will be taken. We will go Into 1923 in good shaDe. The condition is helped by the short age in the California canned Beach crop. It Is 3,000.000 eases short of last year, and this condition: is a favorable one for when there is a big surplus of any fruit cron as there was in California canned peacnes jast year, it affects all rrults. : . . - - .... ., . A Lot of Money .There la a piece of information that is encouraging. The Paulus Bros. Packing is a new oreanlza tion. Its cannery is new, this, sea-! son. That company. In the past 110 days, has paid out to growers about a half million dollars,- or an average of about $4500 a day. ' The Paulus cannery will be the last to close down for the 1927 season. All the rest have finished for this year. The Paulus cannery is aoout ready to start on vege tables. It will have a ran of two to three weeks on carrots, 7 par snips, beets and onions, to start very noon. f -..- ' : WEEK END SPECIALS 1 pkg Citrus Wasftrigf" Powder .
