I 3) High compression in modern automobile engine design offers several I'i tiuet advantages over motors o: r.idium or low compres sion, in addition to the Important feature of increased power and ef ficiency, according to S. Barber, local .Willys-Overland ' dealer. ;s In view of bis wide experience with the high compression type engine employed Jn the Willys-Knight cars, Mr. Barber glres some inter esting Tiews oa tbis subject which Is a leading topic In the automo bile field today. 1 - ' . - i "With motor car buyers show ing greater interest than ever in engines or the high compression design, and with many automobile manufacturers turning to this type of power plant in the modern car, it is interesting to note that own ers of Willys-Knight cars for more than ten years have been getting all the advantages of high coio-pressio- performance. rr "High compre&eion in Its ordin ary sense means that the gasoline mixture is highly compressed Jn the combustion chamber with the result that more force is given to the piston in its downward stroke after the explosion. This additional force on the piston furnishes more power to the engine. Since there is virtually no 1 increase in the amount of fuel consumed when higher compression takes the place of lower compression in an engine of the same size, the greater amount of power" given off by the higher compression, motor enables It to do the same amount of work with less" effort; all of which makes for Increased fuel economy. i ne . iinignt sieeve Taice ; en gine, because of its patented de sign; lends itself ; more readily for high compression service than en tine of other, types. Certain limi tations are imposed on those of other design which are not found is the sleeve ralve engine. : "The cylindrical shape of the combuslon . chamber surmounted with a dome shaped head carry ing the spark plug la the center, la typical In the Knight engine de sign. This produces the full force of the explosion directly to the head of the piston! J The Ideal lo cation of the spark plug In the center .of - the ' compressed - fuel charge, result In the spark trav eling the : shortest 7 possible dis tance. This assures a speedy burn ing of -the charge and the resul tant transmission of extra energy. "It Is Important to note that the Willys-Knight engine works as efficiently and a- smoothly when ordinary gasoline Is used, where as in other types of high compres sion engines, to obtain freedom from "knocks" it is necessary to use : one of the several special brands of gasoline made especially for high compression engines. This Is a decided factor in the econom ical operation of the Knight pow ered cars." All of these things bring added pros perity to the southern farmer. f "It must also, be . remembered that there was some curtailment in acreage planted to cotton and that this land was planted to feed crops, which reduces the amount usually spent by the southern farmer for feed stuffs. j This improvement In thej con- i JOE 'WILLIAMS JOE WILLIAMS!
