Bungalow for a corner lot. This would make :
one of the most attractive -and comfortable
five . room bungalows in , Salem and would .
attract a jgreat deal of favorable attention. .
; : One of i the advantages of brick construc
tion is the: freedom of repeated paintings
and the change in style of. colors. The color
of even the common red brick is permanently, '
attractive and becomes softer with the years.
Added-; to the . freedom from paint, bills
and ! the permanent beauty of your home is '
the fact that you have a permanent structure
on 'which? depreciation is a very minor item.
The slight I additional cost of constructing
this home of brick and hollow tile is more
than offset by ,
1. r Freedom from frequent painting
2. Saving in fuel, bills burned clay is a
non-conductor ? of heat with the hollow 1
spaces preventing the dissipation of the heat.
Mrs. Porter and Claude McKenney say they ;

S. Summer'comfort by the same principle that prevents the dissipation of heat in the winter, the ieat is kent
out ia socomer, and the house is kept comfortably cool. '7 m i 7 i .
4. Fire Safety why should not one take the same precautions for the home that he does for the office? -is not
one's family as important and as valuable as one's papers and merchandise?

City. Mr. Clark wai asMng for
literature forr us in converting
his patrons to the use bt brick.
This company makes a great
number of: construction loans to
home builders within the Metro
politan district of New York, and
we .believe that any .data with
which you may be In position to
f crnish us regarding ihe'B&e of
common brick as compared with
the less dumble materials for
building construction, such,, as
frame and stucco, frame and clap
board, etc would be of value to
cany of the applicants for loans
from this company.- ft -occurs to
the undersigned that considerable
advertising ; value would result to
the common brick manufacturers
through your organisation equip-1
ping the various building and
loan companies of the country
with data regarding this subject,
as these institutions, which large
ly confine their loans to one or
two-family' dwelling houses, could
doubtless Influence a great many
of their applicants for " building
loans to vse common ' brick In
their eonsUacthm.
"Indeed , It would be greatly to
their, advantage to do so as a
building constructed of this sna
tertal te a much better risk from
the mortgagee's point of view than
buildings, of lees durable mater
lals. especially in the outer walls.
"Fully T5 per eenfof the loans
made by this company within the
last five years have been made on
brick Jobs, as It haa been our ex
perience that the depreciation In
this type ol construction without
any further attention whatever
upon the 1 part of the owner ? or
mortgagor is - less than one-third
of the . depreciation on frame
buildings daring the average time
of onr loans.
"Our difficulty In persuading
people to build with brick instead
of the less durable materials has
been that most home builders are
thinking of first cost when plan

"What this man has said of com
mon brieve applies with equal force
to burned clay hollow building
tile. Claude McKenney, local
manager for Mason Ehrman com
pany, built a large hollow . tile
house east of Salem; and is a
booster for this type of construc
tion. The house Is pleasantly cool
In summer, and the whole house
is kept ' comfortably warm In
winter by the wood range and an
open fire place, using very little
fuel. 7 7 ' .7 ' i -.. ; '
Burned clay - Is a non -conductor
of heat, and thus burned
clay building materials, as com

HoHow Tile is divided into 3 hollow
spaces which act as an Insulator.
These hollow spaces contain dead air
and are confined. or sealed in an ef
ficient non-conductor burned clay.
Hollow - Tile dead-air spaces will
coach, hold and neutralise heat, cold -and
moisture. (See diagram.)
The fact that. Hollow Tile does in
sulate often reduces the heating cost
25 or more. It insures sanitary
and healthful housing. ,
, Burned clay Hollow Tile construc
tion is little, if any, higher In cost
than the perishable and inflammable
frame construction.
