ky concentration warehouse com
panies in Kentucky, with totul

Whites Begin Show Tour
to Compete for Honors '

ing to Casa Nichols of Salem were
started out on the California and
t-Jtah fair circuit yesterday morn
ing in charge of Lowell Stockard.
This is the forth year that
Nichols has had- his bogs on the
outstate fair circuit., and during
that time he has built up a repu
tation as 'one of the outstanding
Chester White breeders of the
Northwest.
He has found the fair circuits
one of . the best advertising medi
ums, because many, farmers have
adopted the practice of attending
i fairs in order to get definite and
i first Hand Information regarding
jb'-eeding stock. Incidentally
! Nichols has always
won enough .
premiums to offset the expense
and to leave a' margin besides. For
instance, last winter he shipped
two young boars to Arizona. The
sale was, made because a party in
California had seen them on ex
hibit and recommended them to
the buyers in Arizona.
- Part of this year's show herd
was on the circuit last year, and
made very creditable winnings. A
three, year old sow, "Ladies'
Queen,1', was grand champion at
tie Pacific International in both
1925 and. 1926; and has likewise
ben grand champion at every fair
where she has been shown.
"Brookslde Big Boy Junior" has
also won grand champion ribbons
! w here ever shown with the ex-
cc-pt ion of portland last year. He
won a silver cup at Salt Lake as
the best of his breed.
The butcher and packer is in
terested in the dressed carcass of
a hog. ' This is the point that
Nichols bears in mind, as is evi
denced by the fact that one

member of a local pig club,. Dur
ing the brief span of years since
then he" has. made a4 great" study
of the art of selecting and fitting
his animals. In. discussing breed
inpr stock he stated that he did not
sto bow an ordinary breeder could
fKll more than an average of three
or four pigs ,for breeding stock
fiom each litter. He qualified
tills remark by mentioning that a
good reputation is - the greatest
good that he can hope to attain
and he feels that the only way to
I roach that goal Is. never to sell an
i;nimal that he would not want
to keep himself as a member of
his breeding herd.
Marion county has the largest
number of hogs .oi any county in
the state. The stock men say the
difference between scrub stock
and pure bred stock - probably
show up greater , in hogs than in
any other type of livestock.
