SALEM IS THE NOISEST CITY SOUTH u.'Wv- " : OF THE NORTH POLE Editor Statesman: Is there no way by which the frightful and unnecessary noises in Salem can be controlled ? Is it impossible to avoid a constant auditory bombardment which freezes the soul? HaVe'ihe council and police no power to protect the peace, temper and prosperity of twenty-five thousand citizens? V- Item 1. The Southern Pacific trains day and night, night especially, come ; into the city whistling like Astoria fog horns. Then after five long blasts, often repeated, the trains pull oat, clanging the bell, blowing off -steam and clattering over rattlycrossings. , : Item 2.' Salem, Or., July 28, 1?27. .......... The owlsTof Wall Street, Henry Clews & Co., in their current weekly bulletin, say the Business outlook in the country generally-is "for a moderate improvement." This is due to many things; including kn improving foreign trade, backed by the huge; sum of American money privately in vested abroad of $13,000,000. The recent footing up of this total, has surprised the country.. Business . generally in the United States is on the up grade ; though profits are on narrof margins in many linefs. fThe United States is in' for a period of moderate improvement, for a long time to come. .
