This Family Head Delights
in Many New Automobiles
George K. Schmidt, a bank pres
ident of Chicago, says his hobby
is new motor cars. He has four
children and five cars of the bet
ter type. His daughter and each
of his three sons has a car of his
or her own, and for general fam
ily use there is a big six sedan.
The notion of two cars to a fam
ily is becoming obsolete as to fam
ilies that can afford cars, and per
haps the time will come when in
the family being outfited individ
ually judicious management will
provide one for the cook. Motor

Statistics Show Remarkable
Possibilities for Medium
. Priced Cars
With 2,700,000 families in the
United States now owning two or
more automobiles and with every
indication of a continued increase
in multiple car ownership, motor
car manufacturers are regarding
this fast-increasing "second car"
market with significance.
The influence of the two-car
family tendency is reflected this
year as never'before in automobile
body design, fittings and appoint
ments. Thjgre is no question, says E. H.
McCarty, general sales manager of
the Nash Motors company, "that
tire American public, accepting the
automobile as a practical and in
dispensable form of transporta
tion, is rapidly adopting the two-car-to-a-famlly
plan. Figures com
piled on this subject by the Na
tional - Automobile chamber of
commerce are interesting and il
luminating. They show that 10.
per cent of all families in America
own more than one car and that
18 per cent of all car owning fam
ilies in the United States have two
cars or more;
"This situation, while" itnerest
ing, is not at all remarkable.
Quick," convenient transportation
long since has become retognized
as a practical necessity in the mod
ern conduct of business, domestic
and secial affairs: Thousands of
families who have but one car. to
day are definitely planning on two
cars for the future. From dealer
reports- we' find that multiple car
ownership is by no means confin
ed to the larger centers or to any
particular section of the country."
Three new models just intro
duced by Nash Motors are design
ed to meet the "two-car" situa-
Ltion. each in its particular field
These are the new Aavancea six
J Coupe, with rumble seat, the new
Advanced Six Sport Touring mod
el, and the new Special Six- Cab
riolet with collapsible top and the
rumble seat. Reports from Nash
dealers indicate that many of the
models have been purchased by
families who have adopted the
two car plan.

CONTRACTORS SSY
RECORDS POSSIBLE
WASHINGTON. (Special)
Construction operations this year
stand a fine chance to break all
previous records.; Tnis is indicated
by statistics compiled : by . be As
sociated General Contractors of
America- ' .
Not only have r the "first four
months of 1927 set a' mark which
is well above any recorded by the
volume of operations' under way
during a similar period in any year .
on record, but observations show a
large amount of building is con
templated for the near future.
The volume of contracts award
ed -during March was the greatest
ever recorded for that month. As
a matter of fact, only one month
August, 192fc has reached a high
er figure in the past.
The March volume of contracts
awarded was 56 per cent greater
than the corresponding volume for
February and 10 per cent greater
than the figure on record for
March, 1926.
Special significance is being at
tached to these figures by experts
who point to the fact that the vol
ume of operations recorded for
1926 was the greatest shown by
any previous year. .
The volume of contracts award
ed last month .reached the 260
level on a scale which places the
1913 average at lOO'as its basis.
The volume of awards made dur-.
Ing the .first three months of 1927
exceeded by 5 per ceni the volume
recorded during the corresponding
period in 1926. - '-
