BIBLE STUDY. PROPOSED
Question Brought ! Before School
Board by YMCA Secretary
The question of bible study In
the public schools came before the
school board last night when a
letter from C A. keils, IfMCA,
secretary, was read by Superinten
dent Hug. Mr. Kells, who has
been appointed chairman of a
committee of seven from the min
isterial association, to establish a
course 6f bible study requested
that the board approve a plat! for
excusing pupils to attend bible
classes during regular school
hours, and to grant suitable
credit.
Mpmbr expressed disapproval
of the plan oh account of Us pos
sible interference wHh the regular,
school routine, and passed a mo
tion to the effect that cooperation
would be extended in the inaugur
ation of bible classes to be con
ducted outside of school hours and
to grant the credit provided; for
under the state law, if the instruc
tors were approved by the super
intendent. Week day bible classes were
tried out four years ago at Gar
field school when about half the
children there were enrolled. At
another time the .plan was tried
out at all the schopl when about
one-third of the pupils attended.
The classes then were held from
8:30 to 9 a. m. outside of school
hours.

Tributes to Memorial Day were
offered at the Kiwanis luncheon
yesterday in song by Ronald
Craven, at the piano by Kenneth
McCormaek and by Dean George
H. Alden of Willamette university
who made the address of the day.
Craven sang "There Is No
Death," one of the outstanding
post-bellum songs, and McCorm
aek played a southern medley ar
rangement. Announcement of the Salem
Boy Scouts pageant and carnival
to be held the night of June 2,
was made by Charles Wiper, re
presentative of the Kiwanis club
on the Cascade council.
