"Record production such as is nw being announced means let ting go of every standard of care and setting up a new standard, speed which mast be obtained at the expense of the quality. We, have, in proportion, as great a demand for General tires and tubes as the demand for other makes, and have keen, propor tionately, just as far behind our orders in the present buying rush. But we have insisted on using more men instead of more speed, and demand just as mucn care in every operation as when produc tion Is at its lowest ebb.. We want every General tire to be just as good as every General tire, and demand exact, careful work, un interrupted by any demand for a sudden, greater or double produc tion per man. It is by a careful maintenance of the General stand ard that we maintain the high quality of General prodncts. We believe that those who attempt to produce more than a normal sup ply of merchandise ; without ade quately adding to their man pow er at the same lime, suffer from their record production when the rush merchandise has to show its merits in road work. So there will never be production contests at General,-for a day or a week or any period. - We are working 24 hours a day. with three shifts of careful workers; and believe that is a Barer way to buUd up produc tion quantity.". . . . aiAeriqa's scenic: ' j OUT OF DOORS CALLS' . Not only did the Whippet set a remarkable record In its climb up the mountain, which is nothing more than solid rock with no roadway, but the efficiency of the 4-wheel brake equipment on the Whippet was proved when Murray turned the car around on the summit and began the peril ous descent. Several times Mur ray brought the Whippet to & complete stop selecting the steep est slopes for the exhibition. Thousands who saw the re markable performance of the Whippet agreed that it was one of the most unusual accomplish ments. In, automotive annals Inas much as the car had no road or trail to follow other than the pedestrian path which winds up the mountain side over boulders and numerous crevices and ruts. Despite the amazing speed with which hte car essayed the climb. the record wouldt have been con siderably lower had not over-anx- ous spectators crowded the path upon two . occasions compelling iMurray to bring the Whippet to a dead stop on the steep slopes. The Whippet was the third car that ever climbed Stone mountain and returned to the bottom under its own power. The official time of the climb was caught by Al S. Jones, repre sentative of the Atlanta Automo bile association, affiliated with the American Automobile associa tion. The Whippet used by Murray in the record breaking dim was the same car he used two weeks previous in smashing the record from Atlanta to Macon, making the trip in 1 hour," 53 minutes, beating the crack Dixie Flier, oue of the belt trains in the -south. A week later the same car and driv er established a new world's rec .
