MAJOR ATTACK
There' sailed from New York yesterday a delegation of
five official representatives of the United States government.
supported by a staff of about
A delegation bound for the
May 4th. ; The American delegates are Henry M. Robinson,
Los Angeles, member of the Dawes commission ; Norman H.
Davis, New York, former assistant secretary of treasury and
of state; John W. OXeary. Chicago, president of the United
States Chamber of Commerce; Alonzo E Taylor, professor of
pathology! of Stanford university, and Dr. Julius Kline, direc
tor of United States bureau of domestic and foreign com
merce. 'J- :':.p ;r.; - -f
This economic conference is to be held for the rehabilita
tion of Europe; to break down the barriers of the European
countries; to "level" the barriers, so that those countries may
trade and treat with one another on a broader and more
unselfish basis; with greater friendship and cooperation
And all that, and all that.
r- So it is stipulated in the bond; in the conditions precedent
and announcements preliminary ; and all this and ajl that are
in the program; in the agenda
But it! is really held for the purpose of making an attack
on the protective tariff duties of the United States.
V Chiefly in the. minds of the European delegates to the
Geneva conference will be the idea of "leveling" American
tariff duties. Every nation of Europe casts longing eyes at
the American market, the greatest and best in .the world.
They know that with the exception of a few articles they can
produce goods cheaper than the United States, and can under
sell America in her own market place if given the opportun
ity; if there is no tariff to equalize conditions at home and
abroad. They will plead eloquently and plaintively for an
: pen door. -
But there must be no such thing. The American people
must not be impoverished in order to rehabilitate Europe.
We must not bring on a deluge of American unemployment to
sop the deluge of the same kind in Europe. This will be the!
, greatesx; mass aitacjc ever maae .upon me American protec
tive tariff; assisted by 'every resource of our international
bankers, and the agents in. this country of European manu
facturers arid shippers ; .
v But the United . States must be adamant against the
attack. It is a big fight, but there must not be a dent in the
armor of the American protective tariff. V -"
5 Marion county has no county agent paid by the state and
the county but she has three who are paid by private con
cerns. They are Frank A. Doerfler, employed by the First
7 National bank of Salem; Henry Crawford, on the staff of
Ladd & Bush, bankers, and Ivan Stewart of the information
department of the Charles R. Archerd implement company.
They are all constantly doing full time work such as a county
agent would do. Mr. Doerfler is carrying on many experi
ments. , He has established the fact that corn will keep in the
crib,' for instance.. He has two large corn cribs on his own
farm in the Waldo Hills, and the corn; stored last - fall is in
'fine condition. Mr. Stewart is an expert, consulted daily by
, j our farmers, and on the go every day excepting on Saturdays,
when he meets the farmers coming to -the city. I Mr. Craw
: fords services are available in solving many kinds of prob
lems for the farmers, i All three of these men extend their
work into Polk, and cooperate with thecounty. agent over
there! T Just as they would witli a Marion county agent, the

A GIGANTIC ASPARAGUS INDUSTRY POSSIBLE
Any man of vision and superior organizing abilitymay
head a movement here that will lead to the building up of a
gigantic asparagus industry in the Salem district; akin to the
operations in the delta districts of the Sacramento valley,
J This can W done bjr organizing the growers to guarantee
a suitable supply at prices that will allow of canning at a
profit : -; : ' t
1 It might be done through cooperative canneries belonging
to the growers themselves. . ; '
: The building up of a big asparagus industry here would
be a good thing in several .ways.": There are two reasons that
are worthy of especial mention: . i,-
i First: This would give an
about two months before the
' ' Second : There is no vegetable that lends itself so,well for
canning purposes ; no other
prime and .tender condition, is
cesses of canning made more tender and appetizing.

The new "Washington" variety, originatetl by the United
States department of agriculture, has. been tried out in the
Salem district, and it does wonderfully well here.,' It makes
a product that the wide world cannot, beat, if it can be equaled
in another section. , " ; ( '
There is jno good reason why -asparagus growing' on ,an
extensive ecaie should not be developed here in the' Salem
district, . The growers here now who produce it commercially
have been doing welL ' . 1. f
'It is a safe crop. Using the rust-resisting Washington
variety, there can be no danger of failure, under proper con?
ditions of culture here, and on the right soil, so abundant in
this district; and with the. asparagus beetle kept out or its
ravages controlled. ! -. : ; J : " '' .:H
i We can produce the white
mand for that kind.; And we can produce the green kind,
which is a better flavored vegetable- - -. : S , t
And there is a possibility of. making a specialty of the
latler product to b put up inr cans with' Salem as the center
for the. production of a superior article. . , . '"yr
There is 100,000 acres of land east of Salem, that may. "be
included in the Santiam irrigation district, on which aspara
gus can be successfully grown on a commercial scale; and
there are vast other valley acres available. ,
Cine ot the next major developments of industries on the
land, hookeu up with industries in the cities and towns of this
district, should be the beginnings on an ambitious scale of a
gigantic asparagus industry. It is feasible.
r There was a report a little while back that Congressman
Hawley would not be a candidate for reelection. The report
was started by a small bunch with whom the wish was father
tb the thought or the lie. .Just made up out of whole cloth.
Mr. Hawley will be a candidate for a while yet he is still
young, though old in service, and efficient partly through
long service. And he will.be. reelected every time he runs.
No man mentiored can get to first base in a race with him.
Some sweet day, those who live to see the time will realize
that the dream of a great asparagus industry here is no idle
dream. It is coming why not now, or soon ? i
There is to be an attempt to catch up with the demand for
lime from the state plant at the prison. But it is going to
take a larger plant, or 24 hour a day shifts, and a vast speed
ing up of the raw supply and likely the opening up of a new
quarry. . '
